The silence after Christian’s words stretched endlessly, heavy and suffocating. I stared at his bruised face, my mind struggling to process what he’d just said. It wasn’t an accident. Someone had tried to kill him.
“How can you be sure?” I finally asked, my voice trembling despite my best effort to sound calm.
Christian closed his eyes for a moment, as if forcing himself to relive the night.
“Because the car was following me,” he said slowly. “When I left your apartment, I noticed a dark SUV behind me for several blocks.”
A shiver ran down my spine.
“You’re sure it was the same car?”
“Absolutely.” He opened his eyes again, and the intensity in them sent a chill straight through me. “At first, I thought it was just a coincidence. Solara’s streets are busy, even late at night. But the more I paid attention, the more I realized it was keeping its distance-never too close, never too far. Just… there.”
He shifted in bed, grimacing at the pain, but pressed on.
“When I was heading toward the Rosemont Hotel, everything seemed fine The SUV stayed back, almost like it was just… watching. I didn’t think much of it then. Maybe we were just taking the same route. But when I made the decision to turn around, to go back to you—”
“What happened?” I asked, though part of me didn’t want to hear it.
“It was like someone flipped a switch,” he said, his voice tightening. “The SUV suddenly accelerated. It came straight at me. No attempt to brake, no swerve. It was deliberate, Zoey. Whoever was driving wanted to make sure Í never made it back to you.”
A wave of nausea hit me. Someone had been watching him, waiting-and the moment he decided to fix things between us, they struck.
“It’s like someone wanted to keep us apart at any cost,” I murmured.
“It’s more than that,” Christian said darkly. “It’s like someone didn’t want me getting close to the truth about the sabotage. Think about it, Zoey. While we were fighting, while I believed you’d betrayed me… Who was benefiting?”
Realization hit me like lightning.
“If you kept believing I was guilty…”
“They’d have free rein to keep going,” he finished. “Whatever their plan is, they needed us divided. They needed me not to trust you.”
My mind raced, connecting dots that suddenly fit too perfectly.
“Christian, I’ve spoken to Edward. At Sunvale. He genuinely believes I was the one who leaked Kensington’s information. The emails he showed me looked completely real-they came from my account, my signature, everything.”
“Which means whoever’s behind this has access to both our personal and professional details,” Christian said grimly.
“This goes way beyond corporate sabotage,” I whispered, the weight of it pressing on my chest.
