The trip to Solara had turned out to be far more productive than I’d imagined. I’d decided to come in person with Annie, Matthew, and Raymond-a trusted Kensington employee who specialized in discreet operations-to conduct interviews for my new public relations team. The Milani Hotel had become our temporary base of operations.

Over the past three days, I’d interviewed nearly twenty carefully selected candidates. I’d focused especially on recruiting a few former classmates from the PR specialization course I’d taken a few months ago-talented professionals I knew personally and trusted completely. I’d also managed to convince Lisa, my former assistant from Sunvale, to join the team. Her unshakable loyalty during my time at that rival company had been one of the few bright spots in that nightmare, and now I finally had the chance to reward her properly.

It was Lisa who had made the riskiest and most crucial part of our mission in Solara possible. Using her inside contacts at Sunvale and her intimate knowledge of the company’s procedures, she’d helped Annie, Matthew, and Raymond slip into one of the winery’s events—a private tasting for investors held right on the vineyards where we suspected the fake “organic” grapes were being grown.

I was meticulously reviewing résumés and making notes on the most promising candidates when Annie burst into the office like a whirlwind, her expression a mix of pure triumph and barely contained laughter.

“Zoey,” she said, dramatically throwing herself into the chair across from me, “you’re not even going to want to hear how we got the soil samples yesterday.”

I looked up from the papers, instantly intrigued by her tone and the mischievous spark in her eyes.

“Yeah, I have a feeling I really don’t want to know,” I teased, knowing full well she’d tell me anyway.

Annie hesitated for a moment, as if debating whether to spill the story, then shrugged with a wicked grin.

She got more comfortable in her chair, clearly settling in for a long, dramatic retelling.

“So, we arrived at the event yesterday afternoon, right? Lisa had gotten us perfect credentials as ‘special consultants in sustainable agriculture’ interested in potential partnerships. Everything looked official, convincing, completely professional.”

“So far, it sounds like it went smoothly,” I commented, already bracing for the disaster part of the story.

“The real problem started when we realized the event was way more controlled and supervised than we expected, “Annie went on, her hands flying as she spoke. “There were security guards everywhere, guests were strictly grouped with assigned guides, and there was absolutely no way we could sneak off to collect soil samples without raising suspicion.”

Annie laughed, shaking her head as if she still couldn’t believe what had happened.

“That’s when Raymond came up with the craziest, most brilliant idea ever. He looked at us and said, ‘We need a huge distraction. Something that makes everyone look the other way long enough for us to get the job done.””

“And what exactly was this miraculous distraction?” I asked, genuinely curious.

“Our dear brother Matthew,” Annie said simply, and immediately started laughing so hard she could barely talk. ” Raymond convinced him to fake a severe allergic reaction during the main wine tasting.”

My eyes went wide in utter horror and disbelief.
