Chapter 332
The Kensington mansion in the hills of Southridge had never felt as welcoming as it did in that moment. Even after so many months living in London, the sight of the family estate nestled among green mountains and lush vineyards filled me with a wave of nostalgic longing I hadn’t even realized I’d been carrying. The cool, clean mountain air wrapped around me like an embrace when we stepped out of the car, a sharp contrast to the urban atmosphere we’d left behind in London.
Cinger was completely mesmerized by the new smells and sounds around her. Her dark little eyes darted everywhere, trying to take in the symphony of singing birds, leaves whispering in the gentle breeze, and scents that were nothing like what she knew. She tugged lightly at the leash, eager to explore every inch of this new territory, which must have felt like pure canine heaven compared to London’s city parks.
“Mom! Dad!” I shouted the moment I saw my parents coming out of the house, my heart swelling with happiness at the sight of them after so many months apart.
I let go of Ginger’s leash for a second, trusting she’d stay close, and ran toward them, throwing myself into the familiar arms that had always made me feel completely safe and loved. Mom hugged me with that unmistakable maternal strength, whispering sweet words while Dad waited his turn to pull me tightly against his chest.
“Our girl just keeps getting more beautiful,” Dad said, holding my shoulders and studying me with that proud look that always made me emotional. “London is good for you.”
“It’s not London,” I corrected, glancing back to where Nate stood, holding Ginger in his arms and watching our family reunion with a soft smile. “It’s him.”
Nate walked over with the natural confidence he always carried, though I caught the faint nerves in his eyes- the vulnerability of someone who desperately wanted to make a good first impression on his future in-laws.
“Mr. and Mrs. Bennett,” he said in hesitant but charming Maravinese, shaking my dad’s hand before respectfully leaning down to kiss my mom’s hand. “It’s an honor to finally meet you.’

Mom immediately melted at the gallant gesture and his effort to speak our language, her cheeks flushing as she smiled with obvious approval.
“The pleasure is ours, Nathaniel,” she replied. “Annie talks about you so much, it already feels like we know you.
“Good things, I hope,” Nate joked, shooting me that mischievous look that always made me laugh.
“Only the best,” Dad confirmed, giving Nate a firm handshake filled with unmistakable approval. “Any man who makes our daughter smile the way you do is welcome in this family.”
Ginger chose that perfect moment to bark, reminding everyone of her presence and instantly stealing the spotlight.
“And this must be the famous Ginger,” Mom said, crouching down to her level. “Our first grandbaby.”
“Hey!” Zoey protested, appearing on the veranda with Matt in her arms, wearing an expression of exaggerated
outrage.
“The first girl. A four-legged granddaughter,” Mom corrected quickly, laughing at Zoey’s offended face.

“That’s better,” Zoey said, coming down the steps to join us. “Otherwise Matt would have to compete with a golden retriever for Grandma and Grandpa’s attention, and honestly, I think she’d win.”

Christian appeared right behind her, pulling me into a warm hug before greeting Nate with the easy familiarity of old friends.
“We’re falling behind,” Zoey teased Christian, pointing at Ginger, who was already being thoroughly spoiled by our parents. “We should make a baby girl tonight before they go and make another one.”
he words had come out naturally, part of the playful dynamic that had always defined our family, but I felt my smile falter instantly. The casual joke about “making” babies hit me like a punch to the gut, immediately bringing back the limits Nate and I faced, the hard conversations we’d had and the ones we still avoided.
Zoey noticed the change in my expression almost right away. I knew my sister well enough to recognize the exact moment she realized what she’d said, her eyes widening slightly in horror before she discreetly mouthed a silent ‘sorry’ in my direction.
I shook my head, trying to let her know I wasn’t upset and that I understood it had been an innocent comment, said without any bad intent. The last thing I wanted was for her to feel guilty over something unintentional, especially when we were all together to celebrate.
The tension faded quickly when Matt, who had been watching Ginger with growing fascination, started squirming in Zoey’s arms and reaching his little hands toward the puppy.
“He wants to meet Ginger,” Zoey said, clearly relieved by the distraction her son provided.
“She’s very gentle,” Nate assured her, carefully crouching down so Matt could touch Ginger’s soft fur. “Oliver says golden retrievers are naturally good with kids.”
Matt laughed with pure delight when Ginger gently licked his tiny hand, his eyes lighting up with the kind of joy only small children can show. Watching my nephew interact with our puppy, paired with the look of absolute tenderness on Nate’s face as he took in the scene, filled me with a complicated mix of happiness and melancholy.
“She’s perfect for him,” I said softly, a wave of family love washing over me as I watched three generations fall in love with our newest four-legged addition.
“Perfect for all of us,” Mom agreed, scratching behind Ginger’s ears. “I can already tell this house is going to feel even livelier with her here.”
“As long as she doesn’t eat Christian’s shoes like she does mine,” Nate joked, making everyone laugh.
“My shoes are safe,” Christian declared confidently. “I have experience protecting valuable belongings from small destroyers.”
“Hey!” Zoey protested again, this time genuinely offended. “Matt is not a destroyer!”
“Sweetheart, yesterday he managed to spread every single piece of clothing from the closet all over the bedroom in fifteen minutes,” Christian reminded her, amused. “If that’s not destructive talent, I don’t know what is.”
The conversation stayed light and affectionate as we headed inside the house, Ginger trotting happily beside us as if she’d been part of the family for years.

“Where’s everyone else?” Christian asked, glancing back as if expecting more people to emerge from the car.
“They’re coming in the next taxi,” Nate replied. “They’ll be here soon.”
Being home, surrounded by my family, with the man I loved being welcomed so warmly, created a sense of completeness I couldn’t put into words. Even with the small, painful sting Zoey’s innocent comment had caused, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be, with the people I loved most in the world.
