Chapter 391

Madeline’s POV

I was absently organizing the clothes in the closet when I heard the sound of cars pulling into the mansion’s mair rtyard. My heart instantly leaped into my throat. Was Marcus finally back? I rushed to the window and scanned the vehicles approaching. Two black cars stopped in front of the main entrance, sleek and discreet, just like everything connected to the Kensington family.

From the second car stepped out a familiar figure that made me cry out in pure relief and run like a child.

“Olivia!”

I bolted down the stairs, nearly tripping on the last few steps in my desperate hurry to reach her. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my temples, a chaotic mix of relief, anxiety, and sheer happiness at seeing a familiar face.

Olivia stood in the entry hall, looking around with an expression of carefully controlled awe. I knew that look. She always wore it when she was impressed but trying not to show it. Even coming from a family with its own level of status, it was impossible not to be struck by the Kensingtons’ luxury. They existed in an entirely different category of wealth and sophistication, one that made our “comfortable” life seem almost modest by comparison.

“Olivia!” I threw myself into her arms with enough force that we nearly lost our balance, clinging to her like an anchor in the middle of a storm.

She hugged me just as tightly, and for one precious moment, I felt like at least one essential piece of my world had snapped back into place. Her familiar perfume. The texture of her hair. That deep sense of safety I only ever felt with the one person who truly knew all my secrets-and loved me anyway.

“Oh my God, what happened to you?” Zoey asked, appearing behind us, genuine concern in her voice.

Only then did I pull back from Olivia and really notice the man standing beside her, watching the scene with a mix of amusement and resignation. His features were unmistakably similar to Zoey’s. The same bone structure, the same balanced face, the same natural elegance-except for one alarming detail: his eyes were extremely swollen and red, nearly shut, as if he’d been attacked by a swarm of bees.

“Seriously, Zoey,” he said, and despite his miserable appearance, his voice sounded more amused than truly annoyed. “Next time you say you have a favor to ask me, the answer is no. And don’t even try telling me later that I’m the best brother in the world.”

“But you are,” Zoey shot back immediately, clearly making a heroic effort not to burst out laughing. “I’ll make it up to you!”

Gwen, who had been watching the scene with an entertained expression, stepped closer with exaggerated theatrical compassion.

“Oh, you poor thing!” she exclaimed, holding out her hands like a helpful nurse about to examine him. “We’ll take care of you. I’m sure we can find something for that inflammation.”

“Don’t start with the ‘poor thing’ now,” Matthew said, deliberately stepping away from Gwen’s outstretched hands with mock indignation. “You’re Zoey’s accomplice in all of this!”

And with that, he stormed out of the

room, muttering something unintelligible about never again agreeing to ” simple favors” for his sister, leaving behind only the echo of female laughter and the sound of his irritated footsteps disappearing down the corridor toward somewhere he could suffer in peace.

When we finally managed to be alone after Zoey made sure Matthew would receive all the medical care he

and Gwen promised to arrange cold compresses, I led Olivia up to my room. She examined everything with that same carefully restrained look of awe she’d had in the entry hall, but she didn’t make any direct comments about the obvious luxury woven into every detail.

“Now explain what’s going on,” she said as soon as I closed the door, sitting on the edge of the massive bed and fixing me with that sharp, determined look I’d known since childhood-the same one she used whenever she suspected I was hiding something.

I took a deep breath, trying to mentally organize where to even begin a story that felt too absurd to be real. I told her everything, with as much honesty as I could manage. The tense ultrasound. Vivian’s growing pressure to authorize the DNA test. The disturbing conversation with the doctor. The desperate escape through the staff exit. And the card Marcus had given me the day we met at the yoga studio.

“I had to ask for help. I was scared for the baby,” I finished, my hand instinctively going to my stomach. “I couldn’t tell anymore what was best for him. I didn’t know who to trust. But I did know Vivian and Dominic weren’t options.”

Olivia nodded slowly, methodically processing every word with that analytical mindset that had always defined her.

“I get it,” she said at last, genuine understanding in her voice. “But why exactly did that help involve kidnapping me?”

I couldn’t stop myself from laughing, despite all the tension.

“I don’t know exactly how it happened,” I admitted honestly. “Zoey gave me the short version. She said you needed to be ‘convinced’ quickly, before Dominic could get to you first. But judging by the absolutely tragic state of her brother’s eyes, I’d say you definitely didn’t leave much room for polite conversation or diplomatic negotiations.”

Olivia laughed too, a real, comforting sound that made me feel more relaxed than I had in days.

“He’s lucky I didn’t have my taser on me today,” she said with clear satisfaction, making us both laugh even harder. “Otherwise, it would’ve been way more dramatic.”

When the laughter finally faded and the light moment passed, Olivia’s expression turned serious again, concern settling back in.

“Where’s Marcus?” she asked bluntly.

“Taking care of everything,” I answered automatically.

“And what exactly is everything?”

I hesitated, instinctively knowing the next words would shock her.

“My safety. The baby’s safety. And… our marriage.”
