Chapter 410

Madeline’s POV

My awareness returned slowly, like I was surfacing from deep water. For the first time in days, I could think clearly, without the constant fog of sedatives weighing down my mind. I blinked several times, trying to focus my vision, and realized I was sitting in a comfortable seat upholstered in soft leather.

When I finally managed to lift my head and look forward, I found myself staring into a familiar pair of blue eyes.

Marcus sat across from me, wearing a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his dark hair slightly messy, like he hadn’t slept either. There was unmistakable relief on his face, mixed with something deeper. It was genuine concern.

“Where am I?” I asked, my voice rough after so long without speaking properly.

“Right now?” Marcus replied with a small smile. “Somewhere over the Atlantic.”

“The Atlantic? The Atlantic?” I repeated, confused, trying to process the impossible words. “How did I…?”

“We’re going to Valentia,” he said calmly, like he was talking about the weather.

My mind struggled to catch up. Valentia. I was on a plane. No, probably a private jet. Heading to Valentia. How was that even possible?

“How?” I pressed, panic and disbelief tangling together. “I was in a hospital…”

Marcus sighed, running a hand through his hair.

“We tried to do this the right way, Madeline. I really did. We tried to act within the law, through the proper legal channels. We had lawyers, medical documentation, even police ready to intervene when we found out they were trying to force you into that DNA test.”

He paused, his blue eyes hardening slightly.

“But when I found out you’d ended up in the hospital in the middle of the night because of that clinic’s negligence… the excessive medication they pumped into you…” His voice carried restrained anger. “I had to act on instinct.”

“What did you do?” I asked, Even though the answer was obvious, sitting here like this, I needed to hear it.

Marcus shrugged, a casual gesture that clashed with the enormity of what he’d done.

“I used a few contacts.”

“Marcus,” I said, my voice jumping an octave, “how am I on a plane headed to Valentia? How did I get through the airport unconscious? Passport control? Security?”

He laughed, genuinely amused.

“The Kensington name opens doors.”

My jaw dropped. The simplicity of his answer clashed brutally with the implications behind it. Influence on a level I could barely comprehend.

“Marcus…” I whispered as a shocking realization hit me. “You could be kidnapping someone.”

He looked straight into my eyes, his expression turning serious.

“Technically, I am.”

His words hit me like a punch to the stomach. He had kidnapped me. And at that very moment, my parents and Dominic were probably mobilizing half the Belmonte police force to look for me. There could already be an arrest warrant being issued in his name. This was international now.

“And I’m on a plane headed to Valentia,” I whispered, like I couldn’t quite believe the words myself.

The full weight of what was happening finally crashed down on me. I had fled the country. I was technically missing. Dominic must be losing his mind, not out of concern for me, but because he’d lost control of the situation. And my parents… well, they probably had their own reasons for panicking. None of them had anything to do with me.

I looked at Marcus again, really studying his face this time. There was determination there, but also a vulnerability he was clearly trying to hide. This man had risked everything for me.

“I’m starting to be a little scared of you,” I joked, trying to lighten the moment, even though there was a small grain of truth behind it.

Marcus laughed, his eyes sparkling with amusement.

“I promised I’d get you out of there in a week at most, didn’t I?” He leaned forward slightly. “Marcus Kensington keeps his promises.”

My cheeks warmed instantly as I thought about other promises he’d made. Promises spoken in front of dozens

eople. Vows of eternal union as husband and wife in a marriage that had started out as pure convenience. nises that, technically, were still very much in effect.

blushed hard and decided to change the subject before my thoughts spiraled any further.

“And Olivia?” I asked, suddenly thinking of my cousin, who had helped me through every impossible moment of this nightmare.

Marcus laughed again, this time genuinely, his eyes dancing.

“You should’ve seen Olivia dressed as a nurse, pushing you around in a wheelchair.”

My jaw dropped.

“It was her?” A wave of recognition washed over me. “I knew I recognized the voice. I was just so drugged…”

The memory snapped into focus. That familiar female voice at the hospital that told me everything would be okay. Olivia had been the one who took me to the roof. She’d been part of the rescue plan from the very beginning.

And then a sudden sadness hit me. Olivia had helped me escape, but now I was heading to another continent. When would I see her again? When would I get the chance to properly thank her for everything she’d done?

“I wish I’d had time to say goodbye to Olivia,” I said softly, melancholy creeping into my voice.

That was when a door opened somewhere behind me.

I turned toward the sound and saw Olivia stepping out of a small doorway I hadn’t noticed before, holding a glass of wine and grinning from ear to ear.

“Say goodbye for what?” she said, raising her glass in an imaginary toast. “Valentia, here we come!”
