Chapter 467
Madeline’s POV
I still couldn’t get used to how things worked for a Kensington. Normal people would probably have no idea how to move forward after something like that-might even cancel the trip entirely. People like my family, at best, would scramble to buy a last-minute commercial flight and hope nothing else went wrong.
But a Kensington…
“You bought a new jet and managed to have it delivered today?” Zoey asked, her voice filled with a mix of awe and disbelief.
She sighed, looking at Christian like she was still trying to process the information.
“And you already briefed the entire crew about our trip?”
Judging by her tone, maybe it wasn’t just me. Maybe even she was still occasionally surprised by the sheer power of the last name she’d married into.
Christian answered with a smile-that calm, effortless confidence that seemed to come naturally to all Kensington men.
“I bought it, and it’s even more modern than the previous one,” he said, pulling out his tablet and starting to show photos to Marcus, who immediately got excited too.
It was fascinating to watch them light up over technical specs and advanced security features, like they were buying a new car-not replacing an aircraft that had been blown up just hours earlier.
Zoey flopped onto the couch, muttering something about men and their new toys, shaking her head with an amused exasperation I understood perfectly.
“Matt turns two in a few weeks and he’s already just like his father,” she said, laughing softly. “Any chance he gets, he spends hours on the flight simulator Christian installed in the game room-‘flying’ around and pushing every button. Two years old, Madeline. And already obsessed with machines.”
But thanks to that almost surreal ability to solve problems with money and connections, the next morning we were all boarding a flight to Verdania. Nearly twenty-four hours behind the original plan, still shaken by what had happened-but moving forward.
The new jet really was impressive. It was hard to believe something so sleek and sophisticated had been purchased and fully prepared in less than a day.
While I pretended to sleep-eyes closed, reclined in the most comfortable leather seat I’d ever experienced-I heard Marcus and Christian talking quietly nearby.
“You think it was him?” Marcus asked, his voice tight with restrained tension. “That Dominic had a hand in this?”
“I don’t think so,” Christian replied without hesitation. “I’m sure of it. The real question is… how did he get that close?”
My stomach clenched as I heard the confirmation of what we’d all already suspected.

“Someone inside our trusted team worked with him,” Christian continued, his voice turning darker. “Knowing our schedule, getting access to our jet, getting a bomb through airport security? That’s not small-time work.”
“I know,” Marcus said, and I could hear the weight of worry in his voice. “We’ve always known Dominic wasn’t just anyone.”
There was a pause, and I imagined the two of them exchanging looks heavy with unspoken meaning-sharing concerns that went far beyond what they were saying out loud.
“Have you identified the inside contact yet?” Marcus asked finally.
“No,” Christian replied, clearly frustrated. “They probably caught the fall guy, but he’s not giving up anyone else. Either way, everyone who knew about our trip or worked on it has been suspended and is under investigation until we find the person responsible.”
“Do you think it’ll take long?”
“I’m sure it won’t,” Christian said with conviction. “Especially since the Valentian government is involved now. An attack at an airport isn’t exactly something you can sweep under the rug.’
He paused, and when he spoke again, his concern ran deeper.
“But the real problem is… how many more does he have? What are his next moves? Marcus, Dominic knows exactly where you and Madeline are. Maybe the only reason he hadn’t acted sooner was because he didn’t have the same connections in Valentia that he has in Verdania. And now…” He exhaled slowly. “Now you’re taking Madeline straight into the lion’s den.”
It felt like a punch to the gut.
The lion’s den.
That was how Christian saw Verdania for me-not as my home, but as enemy territory, where Dominic held all the cards.
Marcus let out a heavy sigh.
“It was her choice.”
“And I truly hope it’s worth it for you to respect that choice,” Christian said, his tone deadly serious now-not casual concern anymore. “Because that woman and that baby will be in more danger than ever the moment this plane lands. And honestly? I won’t be able to help you until I’m one hundred percent sure Zoey won’t be anywhere near you when the next attack comes.”
His words echoed through the quiet cabin, and my stomach twisted violently as they sank in.
The realization hit me like a lightning strike.
This was my fault.
Everyone could have died, and it would have been because of me. Because of my decision. My insistence on seeing my father. My need to resolve unfinished business that might not even be worth the cost. I’d put not only my own life and my baby’s at risk, but also the lives of people who had nothing to do with my family mess.

And it was only going to get worse.
Every kilometer closer to Verdania was another kilometer closer to danger. Another step deeper into territory where Dominic had real power, and no limits on how far he was willing to go to get what he wanted.
I kept my eyes closed, pretending to sleep.
But inside, I was wide awake, fully aware of the magnitude of what I’d set in motion by choosing to go back home.
