Chapter 557

Mia’s POV

The woman behind the front desk rolled her eyes so dramatically it was almost funny.

“Great,” she said, her voice dripping with exasperation and something that sounded suspiciously like sarcasm. “Because I’m looking for her too. And for Nick.”

I blinked, completely confused for a moment. I looked at Dante, who seemed just as lost, then back at

her.

“What do you mean?” I asked, stepping closer to the desk. “Who’s Nick, and what does he have to do with Gwen?”

She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she looked us up and down with the quick, efficient assessment of someone used to judging people in seconds. Her eyes were dark and sharp, and there was something about them that told me she wasn’t just some random receptionist.

ooked impatient, worried, and definitely not in the mood for long, detailed explanations.

me in a car that can handle snow, right?” she asked abruptly, completely ignoring my question. “If ade it here in this storm, you must have at least four-wheel drive.”

Jante, never missing a chance to show off, especially in front of a pretty woman, even an irritated one, stepped forward with his smug grin.

“Oh, absolutely,” he said, gesturing vaguely toward the door as if the car might magically appear. “Latest- model Land Rover. Four-wheel drive, special snow tires, diesel heater, stability control… basically the perfect machine for these conditions.”

He was clearly posturing, puffing out his chest a little.

“Great,” the woman cut in flatly, holding out her hand, palm up, in an unmistakable gesture. “Keys.”

Dante blinked.

Like he wasn’t sure he’d heard her right.

“What?”

“Keys,” she repeated, flicking her fingers impatiently. “To the car. Now.”

“You… you want my car?” Dante sounded genuinely shocked, as if she’d just asked for a kidney or his firstborn child.

The woman sighed in a way that made it clear she thought she was dealing with particularly slow children.

“You want to find Gwen,” she said, her voice sharpening with urgency. “I want to find Nick. They’re together out there in this storm. Probably lost. Definitely in danger. So yes, I need your car. Or more

specifically, I need a vehicle that can handle these conditions without getting stuck or flipping over.”

“No way,” Dante said immediately, folding his arms. “We can come with you and help search, but I’m driving my own car.”

The woman laughed.

Not in a friendly way.

It was dry. Almost condescending.

“Sweetheart,” she said, stepping closer to him, something almost threatening in her movement, “I know this region better than anyone. Better than any GPS. Better than any map. I was born here. I grew up here. I’ve spent my entire life driving these roads.”

She paused, locking eyes with him.

“I know every curve, every dangerous descent, every spot that turns especially treacherous in winter. And I’m used to driving a tour bus full of guests on these same roads in bad weather. So believe me when I say you’ll be a lot safer with those keys in my hands than in yours.”

To his credit, Dante didn’t look the least bit intimidated.

Or maybe it was just pure stubbornness.

“And where is this amazing truck of yours right now?” he shot back, lifting an eyebrow in that infuriatingly smug way he used whenever he thought he’d scored a point. “If you’re so experienced and the truck is so great, why aren’t you using it to look for your friend?”

For the first time since this conversation started, I saw the woman hesitate.

Her lips pressed into a thin line. She looked away briefly, focusing on something over our heads before

answering.

“The truck had mechanical problems yesterday,” she said, and there was something reluctant in her voice, like admitting it physically hurt. “The battery froze overnight. And even if it hadn’t, it’s too big. Too heavy for these extreme conditions. It’s not practical for a search. I need something smaller. More agile.”

Dante opened his mouth, clearly ready to fire off another sarcastic remark, but I was officially done with

this ridiculous standoff.

“Listen,” I cut in. “If they’re out there in this storm, now is not the time to argue about who drives or who knows the area better. Can we please just go look for them? Christian will kill me if anything happens to

Gwen.”

The name had an immediate effect.

The woman straightened, her eyes narrowing slightly as she studied me with renewed focus.

“Her brother?”
