Chapter 563
Gwen’s POV
I was folding my clothes into my suitcase, or at least trying to, considering everything seemed to have either shrunk or grown since I’d packed it the first time, when Mia walked into the room without knocking.
Typical.
“Need help?” she offered, already flopping onto the bed before I could answer, clearly having zero intention of actually helping.
“Absolutely,” I said sarcastically, holding up a wrinkled blouse. “Your contribution is incredibly valuable.”
Mia laughed, settling into the pillows and watching me with those familiar, curious eyes.
“So,” she drawled, stretching the word in a way that immediately put me on edge, “are you going to tell me, or do I have to drag it out of you?”
“Tell you what?” I asked, pretending innocence as I folded the blouse badly and tossed it into the suitcase.
“Gwen, for the love of God,” Mia rolled her eyes dramatically. “You spent two days thinking you were engaged to a ridiculously hot guy you’d never met in your life. Obviously I want all the dirty details.”
I felt my face heat up.
“There are no dirty details,” I muttered, grabbing another piece of clothing just to give my hands something to do.
“Liar,” Mia accused, sitting up straighter. “I saw the way you look at him. And the way he looks at you. There’s enough sexual tension there to cut with a knife.”
I couldn’t stop the smile that crept onto my lips.
“Okay,” I admitted, finally turning to face her. “There were… moments.”
Mia clapped her hands like an excited child.
“I knew it! Tell me everything. And don’t skip the good parts.”
I sighed, but part of me actually wanted to talk about it. To tell someone about these strange, confusing, and somehow magical days.
“I really believed we were engaged,” I began, sitting on the edge of the bed beside her. “Like, I truly believed it. And I acted like someone who was engaged. Who was… in love.”
“You in love? What an alien concept.”
I lightly slapped her arm.

“Shut up and let me talk.”
“Sorry, sorry. Go on.”
“I… I tried to seduce him,” I admitted, feeling my face burn. “Multiple times. In increasingly unsubtle ways.

Mia’s eyes went wide.
“You? Miss ‘relationships are unnecessary distractions’ tried to seduce someone?” Mia asked, staring at
“I thought he was my fiancé!” I defended myself. “It seemed completely reasonable!”
“And?” Mia leaned forward, fully invested now. “Did it work?”
I shook my head.
“He resisted. Every time. Even when it was obvious he wanted to…” I stopped, horrified that I was about to say this out loud. “Even when it was obvious he was attracted too.”
“Why?” Mia frowned. “What’s wrong with him? You’re gorgeous. You were basically offering yourself on a silver platter.”
“Because he’s decent,” I cut in, and something warm spread through my chest as I said it. “Because he knew I was vulnerable. Confused. Not in a position to properly consent. So he said no. Every single time.”
I looked down at my hands. At the ring that wasn’t there anymore.
“I’m grateful he resisted for so long,” I said softly. “That he didn’t do anything I’d regret later, once my memory came back.”
Then I smiled, unable to stop myself.
“Not that I would’ve regretted it,” I added with a small laugh. “Seriously, Mia, you should see this man. And the way he is with his daughter. And how he takes care of his mom. And how hard he works even when everything is falling apart. It’s like… unbearably attractive.”
“Wow,” Mia said, studying me with an expression I couldn’t quite read. “You really liked him. Like, genuinely.”
“My broken brain liked him,” I corrected. “Now that I’m normal again, I’m going back to Florentia and forgetting all of this.”
“Are you, though?” Mia asked, skepticism clear in her voice.
Before I could answer, she stood and stretched.
“Anyway, I’m going to bed,” she announced. “That room the inn owner gave me is tiny, but at least the bed isn’t as awful as I expected. We’re leaving tomorrow after breakfast,” she added, heading for the door. “So pack properly and don’t forget anything. Because I’m not coming back here if you leave your

phone charger or something.”
“Yes, ma’am,” I replied with mock obedience. “Can we forget Dante instead? Actually… where is he?” I asked suddenly, realizing I hadn’t seen my cousin since he’d abruptly left the dinner table.
Mia rolled her eyes so hard I could practically hear them.
“Saying goodbye to someone,” she said with a heavy sigh.
My mouth fell open slightly.
“Paula?” I asked, incredulous.
“I thought she’d be tougher,” Mia said, shaking her head in fake disappointment. “But Dante must have something special. Like supernatural pheromones or something. It’s the only explanation.”
She laughed, amused and a little mischievous.
“Anyway, good night. For real this time,” she said, stepping out and closing the door behind her.
I sat there on the edge of the bed for a long moment, staring at my half-packed suitcase, at the room that had somehow become strangely familiar over the past few days.
Then I stood and went back to packing, folding each piece of clothing more carefully now. I put my toiletries in my bag, packed the medication the doctor had prescribed, made sure I had everything.
But as I finished, as the suitcase grew fuller and the reality of leaving grew closer, I felt a strange weight
settle in my chest.
I needed to say goodbye.
