Chapter 635
Gwen’s POV
For a second, the world seemed to stop.
2.3 million dollars. Renee knew,
I took a slow breath, forcing my expression to stay neutral. Years of corporate meetings had trained me well. Never show panic. Never let them see the crack.
But inside, it felt like the floor had shifted beneath my feet.
I turned to Mia.
“Go ahead,” I said, my voice surprisingly calm. “I’ll handle this and meet you after.”
Mia looked between Renee and me, clearly worried.
“Gwen, I don’t think-”
“Please,” I cut in gently, but firmly. “I’ve got it.”
She hesitated another second before nodding reluctantly, giving me one last warning look before stepping through the revolving door.
When we were alone, or as alone as you can be in a lobby full of security and reception staff, I turned to
Renee.
I walked toward her, keeping my voice low and controlled.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said, even though we both knew it was useless.
Renee smiled. That victorious, cruel smile.
“KWJ Holdings,” she said simply. “You know, I have contacts. It wasn’t hard to connect a mysterious company buying up debt with the Kensington family.”
She tilted her head, studying me.
“Honestly, I don’t even know how Nick didn’t figure it out himself.”
She laughed. A grating sound.
“Actually, I do,” she went on. “You told him not to dig, didn’t you? Told him he didn’t need to worry about
Anger simmered under my skin, but I held my composure.
I took a breath, grabbed Renee firmly by the arm, and practically dragged her toward the elevators.
“What are you-?”

“Shut up,” I hissed under my breath.
I pressed the elevator button harder than necessary. When the doors opened, I all but shoved her inside.
I tapped my badge to access the executive floor. The elevator rose in tense silence.
When we reached my floor, I led Renee down the hallway to my office. I opened the door, let her in, then closed it behind us.
I walked to my desk and sat down.
I didn’t invite her to do the same.
“Say it,” I said coldly. “What do you want?”
Renee smiled, clearly savoring every second.
“Money,” she replied simply. “For my silence.”
She pulled out a notepad from her bag, tore off a sheet, grabbed my pen from the desk without asking, and wrote down a number.
Then she slid the paper across the desk toward me.
I looked at the amount.
I laughed in disbelief.
“You’re insane,” I said.
“I’m generous,” she shot back. “That’s nothing compared to everything you have.”
“I’m not giving in to blackmail,” I said, absolute and steady. “I told you. Nick and I don’t have secrets,” I lied smoothly. “It just… hasn’t come up yet. It’s only a matter of time before I tell him.”
“Would you rather he hear it from me?” Renee challenged.
“I can pick up the phone right now,” I said, grabbing my cell from the desk and holding it up between us, and call him. I can tell him everything. Right now.”
Renee crossed her arms and watched me with that infuriating smile.
“Then tell him,” she said simply.
I stood there. Phone in hand. Staring at the screen.
My finger hovered over Nick’s name.
But I didn’t press it. I couldn’t.
Renee laughed softly, victorious.

“I knew it,” she said, pleased with herself.
I set the phone back down on the desk harder than I meant to.
“I don’t give in to blackmail,” I repeated, each word sharp. “Do whatever you want.”
Renee shrugged.
“Fine,” she said, turning toward the door.
She started walking, and I let myself sink back against the chair for a brief second. But then she stopped. Turned just enough to look at me, like she’d suddenly remembered something.
“It’s a shame, you know?” she said with fake sadness. “I’d hate to see Bella suffer because of all this.”
My blood ran cold.
“Bella has nothing to do with this,” I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
Renee turned fully now and took a few steps back toward my desk.
“Oh, Bella has everything to do with this,” she replied, her tone shifting completely. Colder. Sharper.
She paused for effect.
“Because if you don’t give me the money I want, not only will I tell Nick about the debt, I’ll file for full custody of my daughter.”
My stomach dropped.
“You wouldn’t,” I said, but there was no conviction behind it.
“Wouldn’t I?” she arched an eyebrow. “Do you have any idea what I can do with this information in family
court?”
She started pacing slowly around the office like she was presenting a case.
“A bankrupt father who almost loses the property where his daughter lives. Drowning in debt. Financially dependent on a billionaire girlfriend who, by contract, has the legal power to execute the debt on the
child’s own home.”
She stopped and looked at me.
“And what happens if you two fight? If you break up? You could get vindictive, Gwen. You could call in the debt out of spite. And then where does Bella go? Under a bridge?”
She continued, relentless.
“All it takes is a good lawyer to paint the picture: a father with no financial control, mixing his romantic life with the woman who literally controls his debt, putting his daughter on an emotional and financial roulette wheel.”

“Do you really think no judge would at least consider that maybe Bella would be safer living with me? With the mother who has a perfectly stable life and zero conflicts of interest?”
I stayed silent. Processing. Feeling nausea creep up my throat.
“You would do that?” I finally managed, my voice rough. “You would do that to your own daughter? Use her as leverage?”
Renée laughed. Then, for the first time, she sat down in the chair across from my desk, crossing her legs
like she had all the time in the world.
“Would you do that to Bella?” she shot back. “Because really, I’m leaving everything in your hands.”
She leaned back comfortably.
“You choose. Either I tell Nick everything and go to court arguing that he’s financially unstable and emotionally dependent on a woman who has contractual power over the roof above his daughter’s head…
She paused deliberately.
“Or…” she continued with a smile, “you compensate me for what I ‘lost’ in all this. A private agreement between the two of us. Discreet. You stay the fairy savior. He keeps thinking you’re wonderful. Bella keeps living with the father she adores. And no one ever has to find out that the woman who ‘saved’ the vineyard was the same one who almost handed a judge a reason to take his daughter away.”
