Chapter 667

Nicholas’ POV

The call from the school came on a Tuesday blazing with sun, the kind of day when construction dust sticks to your skin like a second layer.

I had a hard hat on and a clipboard in my hand, arguing internally about why the supplier had delivered the damn beam in the wrong dimensions, when my phone buzzed in my pocket.

Bella’s school.

“Hello?” I answered, forcing my voice neutral.

“Mr. Valemont? This is the Isabella’s school office. The principal would like to speak with you. It’s… an important matter.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did something happen? Is she hurt?”

“No, not an accident. But we would appreciate it if you could come in today. As soon as possible.”

I looked around the construction site. Workers hauling materials. The metallic screech of tools. The

controlled chaos.

Suddenly none of it mattered.

“I’ll be there in ten minutes,” I said.

And I was. Montelira wasn’t big, and the drive from the estate to the school was muscle memory. I made it in half the time, my heartbeat pounding in my ears.

It had been a week since Bella screamed that I was going to abandon her.

A week since Gwen walked out of that bedroom with shattered eyes and silence hanging like stone.

That week, I had tried to do everything right. More presence. More conversation. More routine. More “I’m here.” More “Nothing is changing.”

And still, the school was calling.

I parked badly and walked in, still smelling like sawdust and sweat. The secretary recognized me immediately and gestured down the hallway without even asking.

“Principal’s office.”

I turned the corner.

And stopped.

Renee was there.

Sitting in a plastic chair in the hallway like she owned the place. Legs crossed. Perfect posture. Phone in hand. She looked up when she saw me and smiled like she’d been expecting me.

Of course she had.

Heat flared in my chest.

“What are you doing here?” I asked quietly. It was still a school. Kids were walking past.

She raised an eyebrow slowly.

“I’m here because of my daughter,” she said, as if I’d asked something ridiculous. “Why else would I be

here?”

“I wasn’t informed you were coming.”

“I’m her mother. No one needs your permission to inform me of anything.”

I inhaled slowly.

Not here. Not now.

“What did the school tell you?” I asked.

“They said Isabella has been… different,” Renee replied, her tone layered in false concern that always made me want to break something. “Distracted. Irritable. Tearful. A child who feels… insecure.”

Guilt hit me in the gut. Not because I believed her narrative.

Because I pictured Bella sitting in class, trying to look normal while a storm raged inside her.

“This didn’t start out of nowhere,” I said, more to myself than to her.

Renee’s lips curved.

“No,” she said softly. “It didn’t.”

The office door opened.

A woman in her fifties stepped out, elegant and serious.

“You must be Isabella’s parents,” she said, with the slightest pause at the end.

Renee stood first.

“Yes,” she answered smoothly.

“Please, come in.”

The office smelled like coffee and paper. There were neat stacks of files, a window overlooking the courtyard, and an old class photo on the wall filled with smiling children.

The principal sat and opened a folder labeled with Bella’s name.

“Thank you for coming on short notice,” she said, folding her hands. “I’ll be direct. Isabella is a very intelligent student. Usually focused. But over the past few days, we’ve noticed some concerning changes.”

Renee adjusted her hair like she was sitting down for an interview.

I stayed quiet.

Waiting for the strike.

“She’s been more distracted in class,” the principal continued. “Interrupting more often. Losing track during explanations. She seems… elsewhere.”

My chest tightened.

“She also scored below her usual standard on the last assessment,” the principal added, sliding a paper across the desk. “And there was an incident during recess. An argument with another student.”

I took the paper without really seeing it. I already felt the weight of what it meant.

Bella was hurting in a place where I couldn’t shield her.

“She has never displayed this kind of behavior before,” the principal went on. “So my question is simple. Has anything changed in her routine? At home? Any shift that could be affecting her emotionally?”

Before I could answer, Renee stepped in.

“Yes,” she said with a rehearsed sigh. “She found out she’s going to have a sibling.”

The principal blinked.

My blood boiled.

“Renee “I started, but she lifted her hand as if she were trying to protect me from “oversharing.”

“It’s natural, isn’t it?” she continued smoothly, turning to the principal with calm authority. “Children feel these things. She’s afraid of losing her place. It’s a delicate phase.”

The principal nodded slowly, like she’d been handed a reasonable explanation.

“I understand,” she said gently. “Well, first of all… congratulations.”

Renee didn’t blink.

I did.

“Congratulations?” I repeated before I could stop myself.

The principal looked between us, confused.

For the pawn she canted key. And this new chapter for your family.”

ON ANN ON The pregnant one is his mistress Renee said, with zero concern for vocabulary.

My Sot clenoted us the table

Watch how you spok I said quietly, but firm enough that even the principal straightened, “She’s not anyone’s mistress. She’s my fiance

Renee’s smile widened, like I’d stepped exactly where she expected me to.

“Of course Of course Nick. The fiancée.” Then she turned back to the principal with a soft, pitying tone.” The outsider who arrived changed my daughter’s life, and is now filling her head with the idea that she’s going to lose her place to a baby.”

That’s not true,” I said, louder than I meant to. “Gwen would never do that to Bella.”

Renee let out a small laugh.

You really think you understand what she does?” she asked sweetly. “You think you understand her work? That exposed, public world?”

I saw the principal press her lips together, trying to maintain control.

“Please,’ she said firmly. This is not the place for accusations. We are here to discuss Isabella’s emotional well-being. What she needs is a proper conversation, with clarity, so she doesn’t feel threatened by the arrival of a sibling.”

Renee nodded as if she fully agreed.

“Of course,” she said. “That’s why I’m here. I’m already taking care of my daughter’s well-being.”

I leaned forward, unable to stop myself.

“You’re taking care? You call this taking care? You got inside her head. You made my daughter believe Im going to abandon her.”

Renee’s eyes gleamed.

The principal tensed.

“Mr. Valemont.” she warned.

Renee lifted her hand again, calm in a way that made my skin crawl.

“Don’t worry, Principal,’ she said. “I understand the school needs to document these situations. And I’ll make sure everything is handled properly.”

She paused just long enough.

‘Actually, you may be called as a witness.”

The room went silent.

I felt something cold crawl up my spine.

“Witness?” I repeated slowly. “What are you talking about?”

Renee looked at me, satisfied.

She loved this part. The exact moment I realized I was already behind.

“You’ll be receiving a little surprise soon,” she said, almost affectionately.
