“Look who’s talking,” she teased, but she squeezed my hand back “The queen of self-sabotage worried about my heart.”
We sat in silence for a moment, just two sisters sharing unspoken worries about the Bellucci men who had walked into our lives and turned everything upside down.
“I’ll be fine,” Annie assured me at last, her smile more genuine this time. “Marcus knows exactly where we stand. And if he screws up…” She shrugged. “Well, there are other fish in the sea.”
I laughed, shaking my head. Typical Annie-turning something potentially serious into a joke.
“And you?” she asked, tilting her head. “What are you going to do now?”
The million-dollar question. What was I going to do? Stay in limbo with one foot in my old world and the other in the Kensingtons’? Or make a definitive choice, knowing any decision would have permanent consequences?
“Don’t sabotage your own happiness just because you’re afraid it might end.” Her voice was unusually serious. “Sometimes, the risks are worth it.”
As I watched my sister leave in search of another cup of coffee, my phone buzzed on the table—a message from Christian. [I miss you. Can’t wait for the weekend.]
Simple as that. No awkward formality, no hesitation. Just the truth And I had to fight back the smile spreading across my face.
