Chapter 38 A Surprise Proposal

Austin flicked her nose with a teasing smile. “As you wish.”

“Drive,” he ordered.

The driver hit the gas, ignoring that David was just 10 meters away.

Shortly after, Austin’s phone started buzzing. When he answered, he could hear Austin’s voice through the line, saying, “Uncle Austin, why did you leave without even saying hello?”

Austin looked at the sly minx’in his arms and said with a smirk, “I didn’t see you. You’ve returned?”

“Yes… Uncle Austin, is the woman who accompanied you abroad the eldest daughter of the Gibson family?”

“She’s your aunt. I’ll introduce you two some other time,” Austin replied.

The two exchanged a few more words before hanging up. Alicia snuggled against his chest and murmured sweetly, “Mr. Burton, can I take this as you agreeing to my proposal?”

Austin made a show out of checking his watch. “There’s still five hours left on the clock. Our trial is far from over.”

Alicia couldn’t help but puff her cheeks in discontent.

They hadn’t tumbled into bed during their trip due to her period. Still, they’d done everything else a couple could possibly do since then. She had assumed that they were getting along swimmingly, which meant that they were all but engaged at this point.

She never expected Austin to keep her on her toes right until the very last second.

“What’s this? Is someone unhappy?” he teased.

Alicia muttered huffily, “You’d better not be messing with me. I’m a really, really petty woman. Tick me off and I will chase you down just to give you a good chomp.”

“Really? And how are you going to do that? Like this?” He slid an arm around her waist and kissed her.

Flirty moments like this had been happening all the time for the past few days.

Alicia wasn’t blind to the desire in his eyes. Yet, he always stopped himself before he could cross the line. His self-control was maddeningly stellar. Unfortunately, she couldn’t say the same for hers. It didn’t take much for her to turn into putty in his arms.

The car rolled to a stop in front of the Gibson residence.

Alicia pushed him away, breathless. “Alright, that’s enough.”

Austin brushed his fingers over her lips, reluctantly to part ways with her. “Alicia, did you have a good time?”

She didn’t bother denying it. “Yes, it was wonderful.”

She thought he’d say something else. However, all he did was pat her on the shoulder and said, “Go on.”

Alicia felt somewhat annoyed that she hadn’t received a clear answer.

Their entire deal was akin to a contract. A verbal agreement meant absolutely nothing until the ink hit paper. Things could still change.

So, she bit his lip before scrambling out of the car. “I’ll await your good news.”

Austin chuckled as he touched his sore lip. What a fierce little kitten.

“Where have you been?” Frank demanded with a scowl on his face.

“Dad, Alicia’s never around. She’s always hanging around those shady people,” Aria immediately piped up, fanning the flames.

“I went abroad for a few days. You haven’t cared about me for years. Why bother now?” Alicia replied evenly, ignoring Aria.

Frank’s face turned puce. “Abroad? What for?”

“I’ve lived overseas long enough to have a life with obligations there. Why are you raising such a fuss?”

He cleared his throat awkwardly. “I just don’t want you getting mixed up with the wrong crowd. Mrs. Burton called today to inform her that her son has just returned. She wants to arrange for you two to meet

tomorrow.”

Aria instantly protested, “Dad!”

Frank continued, “As for who Mr. David chooses… Well, that’ll depend on you both.”

Alicia curled her lips into a soft smile. “Don’t worry, Dad. I won’t miss this golden opportunity.”

Aria said nothing, but her glare could’ve burned holes through Alicia.

She knew she couldn’t compete with Alicia when it came to beauty. It also didn’t help her case that Alicia had already won Tasha’s favor. No, she would have to resort to every trick in the book to tilt things her way.

Alicia returned to her room to wash up for the night. At this point, Austin’s decision mattered more to her than David’s.

She had just gotten on the ride to Dreamland when her phone rang. It was the special ringtone that she’d set just for Austin.

Her eyes snapped open, completely awake. “Hello?”

“It’s a new day,” Austin replied.

Alicia turned to look at the clock. He had called at midnight sharp. Her heart began to pound at that realization. “What is your answer?”

“Come downstairs. I’ll be waiting for you by the lake,” he answered.

She blinked at her phone dumbly. What was he planning? It was already so late! He wasn’t going to drown her in the lake, was he?
