Chapter 56 The Price of a Promise
The Burton Group had become an empire. Even a small two-percent share could sway decisions-it was worth nearly a billion on paper, but with much greater influence.
For Austin, it was never money. It was about control-the subtle form of power that determined who succeeded and who failed.
Nobody gave up that kind of leverage for free.
Alicia paused on the stairs, gripping the railing with a wry smile. Last night, he said that simply having him was enough. Now, he’s willing to trade me away?
She almost laughed. Good thing I never counted on him. You can’t get hurt when there’s nothing to lose.
Her voice came out cool and sharp. “So that’s what I’m worth to you, huh?”
David’s head snapped up.
For a second, he forgot how to breathe. He’d always believed Alicia wouldn’t move on that easily. That night, she’d ended up with Austin-she was drunk, barely aware. He’d told himself to forgive it since he was the one who screwed things up first.
Yet, now? Seeing her here, dressed in silk and standing next to Austin, he felt like acid was burning within him.
Back in their relationship, she’d kept her distance-separate bedrooms, late nights, and all business. Even at home, she’d wear loose shirts and act indifferent, never letting him get close.
The woman walking down those stairs now wasn’t that Alicia.
Her pink silk nightgown hugged her curves perfectly, the fabric softly shifting around her thighs as she moved. The gentle light from the windows accentuated her body’s shape-her full chest, slender waist, and long, seemingly endless legs.
Her skin was impossibly smooth, pale, luminous, and could be marked by a touch. Her hair fell in loose waves, blending sensuality with ease.
David couldn’t look away. The cool, untouchable Alicia he once knew was gone-replaced by someone who made it difficult even to stand upright.
She paused beside Austin, gently leaning into his embrace. A slow, ominous smile crept across her lips. “So… you’re selling me off now?”
Her words carried an accusation, but her tone was sweet enough to melt.
David’s gaze flicked to the faint mark on her collarbone. His stomach turned. “You… What did you two do?”
Alicia tilted her head and leaned closer to Austin’s chest, her eyes shining. “Oh, David, are you still that innocent? Since I’m feeling generous, I’ll show you.”
Before he could react, she rose on her toes and brushed her lips against Austin’s neck-soft, deliberate, and devastatingly soft.
She had always been beautiful, but it used to be the kind that kept people at a distance-her years in business had carved her into something composed and untouchable.
