Chapter 57 The Cost of Betrayal

“So what now? You sold me out, and I’m supposed to clap, count the cash, and thank you for screwing me over?”

Alicia’s smile faded, replaced by that cool, distant look that always made her seem untouchable.

The teasing warmth from earlier was gone. Her chin lifted, her expression sharp as moonlight-beautiful, cold, and unreachable.

“So tell me,” she went on, her voice calm but cutting, “do either of you plan to explain yourselves? Or was I just a pawn to keep your precious uncle-nephew bromance alive?”

David jumped in before she could walk off. “Alicia, please don’t shut me out like this. I still love you, I swear. I know I blew it, but I can make it right. Just… another chance, please.”

His hands shook as he ran them through his hair. “Whatever went down between you and Uncle Austin-I’ll let it go. Divorce him. I’ll marry you, and we’ll start over.”

Alicia stared at him, speechless. She couldn’t believe he was serious.

Perhaps she wasn’t the easiest woman to love, but she had cared for him with all her heart.

He was younger and somewhat naive. She stayed up late to care for him when he caught a cold, made him soup, and brought back souvenirs from her trips. She treated him like family because that’s what he’d become to her.

She used to worry that he’d wake up one day and regret choosing someone older, so she gave him three years of it. Only then did she bring up marriage. She spent weeks preparing the proposal, wanting it to be perfect.

In the end, he brushed it off like it meant nothing. The life she thought they were building turned out to be a three-year lie.

He made it sound so d*mn casual.

While she was staying late at work, he was out with his buddies-laughing and living it up.

If he hadn’t meant anything to her, she wouldn’t be so furious. She’d have walked away, but her care hurt most.

Now, she didn’t owe him a single explanation.

Her fingers tightened around her dress as she turned toward the man beside her-the one who’d shared her bed only last night. Her icy gaze locked on him as she asked, “So, Austin, that’s how you see it?”

Austin said nothing, quietly watching her to see if any affection for David lingered. All he noticed was intensity-no gentleness or doubt.

He wrapped his arm around her waist and drew her close. “Easy, darling. I didn’t even say anything yet, and you’re already ready to fight. With that temper, it’s a miracle anyone but me can stand you.”
