Alaric’s POV:
I’d always known that Meadow was crazy. But this was one of the rare times that she was willing and ready to show off that part of her. The part that wouldn’t take shit from anyone who had been terrible to her.
Someone like Juniper.
The grin on her face was deliciously wicked as she told me what she wanted-which was for me to open the door and pretend that Juniper was her.
“I want to watch her break.”
My cock twitched.
I cupped her cheek. “You want to play?”
“No,” she murmured, shaking her head. “I want revenge. I want her… I want her to feel hopeful and think she’s won, and then crush her.”
Her beautiful eyes flashed as she spoke, her jaw ticking.
Meadow had come a long way. Initially, she never wanted revenge on her sister. But now, it was obvious that shed had enough. It was obvious that Juniper really wasn’t going to stop until she drained every ounce of happiness from Meadow.
And that wasn’t going to happen. Not under my watch. And from the looks of it… not under Meadow’s watch either.
“Anything for you,” I whispered.
Less than two minutes later, we were downstairs.
Meadow kept herself concealed in a corner while I pulled the door open.
And when my eyes met Juniper’s, I understood why
Meadow had gotten scared of me mistaking her sister for her.
She did look so much like her, especially right now as she was dressed exactly like Meadow, nervous mannerisms like her also. But I wasn’t fooled. And I wouldn’t have been fooled even if Meadow wasn’t here.
It was all in the eyes-and no, not the color.
“Alaric…” she started softly. “Hey.”
The way she said my name pissed me off, but I was a master at poker faces, so it was easy not to let my annoyance show.
“Meadow?” I murmured, arching a brow in fake surprise. ”
You’re… here.”
Juniper’s shoulders dropped with such visible relief that it nearly made me laugh. She really thought this would work. Really thought I’d mistake her for my girl.
“Yeah, I… I need to talk to you. I just…” she paused, lowering her gaze with a sigh.
The anger inside of me simmered even more. She was good, actually. Great at acting like her sister. And it pissed me off more than anything else about this situation did.
Juniper stepped forward, eyes meeting mine again. “I need you.” She started to reach for me but | stepped back, clenching my jaw.
“You hurt me, Meadow,” I said, narrowing my gaze. “And now you show up here in the middle of the night because you need me all of a sudden?”
That was a lie, obviously. If anything, I was the one who had hurt Meadow, and I was already in the process of fixing things with her. But I wanted to see how Juniper would react.
And, as expected, she fell for it.
“I-I know. I know, and I’m sorry, Alaric. I really am.” Her eyes watered. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I hate myself so much right now, but i thought… I thought that if I came here, you would understand.”
“Something’s… off,” I muttered, loud enough for her and Meadow to hear.
Juniper’s body went completely still. “W-what do you mean?”
I leaned in, my lips near her ear. “Your hair.”
“My… my hair?” She stuttered. “Alaric, what are you talking ab-”
“Call me crazy, but I could’ve sworn Camilla told me she gave you a haircut.”
Juniper swallowed loudly, turning to face me. “Oh… yeah, l mean she wanted to, but | just…”
Juniper had no idea who Camilla even was.
“Why are we talking about this?” she asked. “I told you I-lneed you.” She started to reach for me again. “So can you just-”
In my peripheral vision, I saw Meadow step out of the corner, arms crossed in front of her chest as she shot daggers into her sister’s back.
“Touching me is a mistake that you may never recover from,” I said, lowering my voice. Her hand hovered over my chest. “So I suggest you tread lightly…Juniper.”
Juniper’s eyes widened, and with a gasp, she stepped backward. “What?” he whispered. “Alaric, why would you
“God,” Meadow groaned from where she stood, and my gaze shifted to her as she rolled her eyes. Do I really sound like that? Pathetic?”
I saw the exact moment all the blood drained out of her face. Her eyes were wide as she glanced at me, and then turned around to face Meadow.
Meadow wiggled her fingers half-heartedly. “Hey sis.”
