“Elsie… she must have had something important to tell me. She just didn’t get the chance before something happened.” Evadne tangled her fingers in her hair, pulling at the roots, her breath coming in ragged gasps. “She knows how to fight; an ordinary criminal wouldn’t be a match for her. They must have had a gun. The fact that she dropped her phone means they were armed, organized, and there was more than one of them. She might have been followed from the moment she left her house. No… she’s been a target for a while! They were just waiting for the right moment to strike!”
“Avery and Harvey are both gone. Who else would want to harm her?” Thaddeus’s mind raced, and then it hit him. His eyes widened. “Chad and Alexia?”
He thought back to earlier that night, how Chad had been sitting in the living room instead of sleeping. He must have been waiting there deliberately, a dark, silent taunt.
“It has to be them. I can’t think of anyone else who has a grudge against Elsie,” Evadne said, her throat tight with fear. “Elsie was with Avery for years. She must have gone to see his ‘Sir’—Chad—more than once. Chad would have been careful not to meet anyone besides Avery, but after so many visits, it’s impossible not to leave a single clue. Elsie must have figured out that Chad was Sir, and he must have recognized her, even after her surgery.”
“So, to be safe, he wanted to eliminate her. To silence her for good,” Thaddeus finished, his eyes dark with understanding.
“But he already knows that we see through his facade, that we suspect him,” Evadne cried, her eyes red and brimming with fresh tears. “Why would he still go after Elsie?!”
“Because your brother Elvis loves her,” Thaddeus said, his gaze sharp. “And because she has become a part of the Ashbourne family.”
Evadne stared at him, stunned.
“He doesn’t just want to silence her. He wants to use her to control Elvis. To control you.” Thaddeus hadn’t smiled in a long time, but now, a humorless, angry smile twisted his lips. “It’s exactly my brother’s style. He used his status as my savior to emotionally blackmail me for twenty years. Now, he’ll use someone else’s weakness to do the same. It’s a tried-and-true method, after all.”
“But… there’s still a sliver of hope, right?” Evadne grabbed his hand, her desperation palpable. “If Elsie is useful to them, they won’t hurt her!”
Her hand was small and soft, but cold as ice. Thaddeus instinctively tightened his grip, enveloping her hand in his.
Suddenly, a phone rang. Evadne looked at the screen, and her heart sank.
“Who is it?” Thaddeus asked, his gaze fixed on her face.
“Elvis…” she whispered, on the verge of tears again.
“Answer it,” he said, his expression grim. “This is too big to hide from him. You know that better than I do.”
“God, so disgusting. What a mess.”
The winter night stretched on, long and dark. After driving for what felt like an eternity, the Bentley screeched to a halt, the sudden stop jolting the entire car.
“Ah—!” Alexia screamed as her body was thrown forward. Her forehead slammed into the back of the passenger seat, the impact sending a searing pain through her nose and making her eyes water. “Are you trying to get us killed?!” she shrieked at the driver.
“I’m so sorry, Ms. Alexia, I’m so sorry…” her subordinate stammered.
“What happened?!”
“A car… a car cut us off!”
Alexia rubbed her throbbing nose and glared out the front window. She froze. Bathed in the cold, white glare of headlights, Hans stepped out of his car and walked toward them, his expression as hard and unforgiving as the frozen landscape.
