Elvis’s clear eyes widened, and his heartbeat grew heavy and labored.
He understood, of course.
While they launched their own offensive, they needed someone on the inside to coordinate with them for a guaranteed victory. Elsie was imprisoned, and they had no idea what kind of torture she was enduring. If Hans was truly beginning to disapprove of Chad and Alexia’s actions, he might be able to help Elsie secretly.
But it was a risk.
It meant that, for now, they were betting everything on Hans’s character.
“Chad doesn’t control people for no reason. Once someone is in his grasp, he will use them to their fullest potential.” A heavy weight settled on Thaddeus’s chest. “Only by figuring out what he’s planning can we have any hope of finding Elsie!”

The press conference was scheduled for Saturday at 5:00 PM in the main conference hall of the Abernathy Group hotel.
At 3:00 PM, in the CEO’s office of the Abernathy Group, Chad sat stiffly on the sofa, his expression cold. Alexia stood beside him, her hands trembling as she changed the dressing on his left ear. It had only been two days since he’d been shot. The piece of flesh had been stitched back on, but the wound was a hideous, caterpillar-like scar. Unless he wore a shoulder-length wig, it was impossible to hide.
The man who once appeared gentle and refined now seemed to have a dark cloud hanging over him, radiating a chilling aura that made one’s blood run cold.
“I-I’m sorry, Sir… I did my best.” Alexia’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking. She wasn’t a special effects makeup artist. The wound had still been bleeding and oozing pus that morning. What more could she do?
“Sir, we can just seal off the venue and post heavy guards to keep Baron out.”
Initially, Chad hadn’t been particularly interested in killing Mr. Zade. It felt like using a cannon to shoot a mosquito—beneath him. But now, as the new man in charge, he needed to establish his reputation and authority. Since Thaddeus and Jareth were working so hard to protect this mutt, he would kill him right in front of them, just to watch their efforts turn to dust.
“Thaddeus and Jareth will definitely escort Baron to the press conference. Tell Hans to take some men and intercept them.”
Alexia replied, “Yes, Sir!”
“And add one more thing.” Chad slowly opened his eyes, a storm of fury brewing in his pupils. “If he fails this mission, tell him not to bother coming back to see me.”
