Thaddeus and Cassius managed to get Mr. Zade and Gordon out, and the four of them sprinted toward the other end of the alley. The sounds of battle raged behind them. Thaddeus glanced back at Elvis, a lone figure weaving through a storm of violence, single-handedly holding off a dozen men. His heart, cold for so long, began to beat fiercely, growing warmer with each thud.
“Thaddeus!” Suddenly, Cassius skidded to a halt.
Thaddeus looked ahead, and his heart plummeted.
A tall, imposing figure stood silhouetted at the mouth of the alley. Even though his face was obscured, his untamed aura and the scent of blood that clung to him were unmistakable.
It was Chad’s right-hand man, Hans.
“Mr. Thaddeus! W-what do we do?!” Gordon stammered.
“You go. I’ll hold him off,” Cassius said, stepping forward, his eyes glinting like cold steel.
“Gordon, take Mr. Zade and go now. Don’t miss the press conference.” Thaddeus’s throat tightened, his voice firm. “I’m staying. I’ll face him with my brother.”
Cassius’s dark eyes widened in shock. What had he just called him? He couldn't have misheard.
“Okay… Mr. Thaddeus, you two be careful!” Gordon nodded, his eyes red. As much as it pained him, he had to obey. A weakling like him would only be a burden.
Cassius immediately refused. “No! Both of you go!”
Cassius’s dagger plunged deep into Hans’s right shoulder. Dark red blood gushed out.
But Hans’s face remained impassive, as if he couldn’t feel pain. He stared coldly at Cassius’s sweat-drenched face.
For a moment, his vision blurred. Fragments of memories flooded his mind—some of the man before him, some of Evadne, and some of the middle-aged woman who had tearfully called him “Hubery.”
The feeling was disorienting, confusing. But he didn't feel any aversion to these people, his supposed enemies, invading his thoughts.
Cassius froze, his hand tightening on the dagger’s hilt as he stared at the painfully familiar face. He hadn't expected Hans to neither fight back nor dodge. But he couldn't let his guard down. This man was Chad’s pawn, the one who had repeatedly and mercilessly attacked Evadne and Thaddeus. He would give his own life before he let that happen again.
