His Ex-Wife Is A Billionaire (Evadne and Thaddeus) novel Chapter 1244

Though advanced in years, Hamilton Abernathy faced the younger, formidable board members with a vigor that belied his age. His silver hair did nothing to diminish the sharp, commanding presence he’d always possessed. Seated in his wheelchair, his silence alone was enough to create a palpable pressure, instantly transporting Frederic back to the days of working under his father’s domineering shadow.

"Gentlemen," Hamilton began, his gaze sweeping across the room, a smile on his lips that didn't reach his eyes. "I trust none of you object to an old man like me attending a board meeting?"

"Of course not, Mr. Abernathy, Sr. You are a director of this group," they chorused.

Hamilton nodded. "The group has fallen on turbulent times recently. Our stock price is unstable, and we're under intense public scrutiny. As you all know, I had intended to enjoy my retirement and give my sons and grandsons the space to lead. I worried that too much interference would only breed resentment. However, with one problem arising after another, as a director, I feel it is my duty to be here and share in this burden with you all."

Frederic’s lips turned white from how tightly he pressed them together, but he could only nod in agreement. It had taken him nearly two decades to supplant his brother in their father's eyes, to finally earn his trust and be given the reins of the Abernathy Group. Now, his father's sudden appearance and his thinly veiled concerns felt like a direct slap to his face.

"Frederic," Hamilton said, his tone suddenly sharp.

"Yes, Dad," Frederic responded at once.

"I know what you were doing," Hamilton stated, his expression grave. "After the scandal and the disastrous media fallout, you were about to vote on whether Chad, as CEO, should be held accountable."

Chad remained motionless, his eyes a dark, fathomless pool.

Frederic cleared his throat. "Yes…"

"Put that on hold for a moment. I have an important announcement to make to the board."

The room fell silent as everyone waited.

"I am not joking." Hamilton looked up at Evadne with an affectionate smile. She bent down humbly and took his weathered hand. "I am transferring ten percent of my shares to Ms. Ashbourne."

Frederic swayed on his feet, his mind reeling. "What did you say?!"

Hamilton ignored him completely. "From this day forward, Ms. Ashbourne is a major shareholder of the Abernathy Group. I want her on this board. If anyone has any objections, you can voice them now. Don't go stirring up trouble when it's time to vote and embarrass an old man. This old man can be petty, and I have a long memory."

After a threat like that, who would dare to speak up? Opposing Hamilton Abernathy was career suicide.

Thaddeus gazed at Evadne’s calm, beautiful face, then at his grandfather. A wave of emotion washed over him, but with it came understanding. His grandfather held twenty-seven percent of the group’s shares. Giving ten percent to an ally was a strategic move to consolidate his power on the board, to dilute the decision-making authority of Frederic and Chad.
