Chad's eyes narrowed, a flicker of surprise breaking through his dark composure. He had expected Hamilton's grand entrance and Evadne's appointment to be the opening salvo of a coordinated attack to oust him. He had prepared a thousand counter-strategies, but he had never considered the possibility of a smooth, unopposed victory.
Frederic was also stunned, though this was the outcome he had secretly desired. The Chad of today was not just his son; he was a Sword of Damocles hanging over his head, a constant, terrifying reminder that his past sins were not buried but were a dormant volcano, ready to erupt and destroy him. And the detonator was held in the hand of his own son—the son he had trusted and empowered.
Frederic's dull eyes watched Chad rise gracefully amidst a round of applause. He couldn't quite register the words his son was saying. His gaze drifted to Thaddeus, who remained composed, a deep melancholy in his eyes. Even after being wronged so grievously, he was as calm as the deep sea at night, his quiet sorrow a silent tide. A bitter taste filled Frederic's mouth. He knew his eldest son had become a monster, and he knew his youngest was pure-hearted and just, a son he had neglected for over twenty years. But for the sake of the Abernathy Group, for the sake of himself, he had no other choice.
"Thank you, Grandfather, Dad, and all the board members for your trust in me," Chad said smoothly. "I will manage the Abernathy Group to the best of my ability, secure the A5 Project, and live up to your expectations."
He finished speaking and slowly lifted his eyes, his gaze landing on Evadne. Then, under the watchful eyes of everyone in the room, he walked directly toward her.
Evadne felt his gaze, as unsettling as a shadowy den, and her heart clenched. The handsome man before her seemed like a viper with the devil's eyes, flicking a cold, forked tongue in her direction.
Thaddeus’s pupils contracted sharply. He stared at Evadne's slightly stiff expression, the hand resting on his knee tightening into a white-knuckled fist.
"Ms. Ashbourne, congratulations on becoming a part of the Abernathy Group," Chad said, a polite smile forming on his lips as he extended his right hand.
Evadne took a steadying breath and met his smile with one of her own, placing her hand in his. His palm was cold, like touching jade.
Thaddeus’s eyes were dark pools of swirling emotion. Evadne no longer belonged to him, but seeing her touch another man sent a suffocating weight crashing down on his chest.
"However," Chad said, his tone shifting to business, "I trust that your earlier statement about KS Group withdrawing from the A5 Project competition wasn't just for show?"
Evadne’s lips curved into a sharp, beautiful arc. "Of course not. We Ashbournes always keep our word. If you have any doubts, Mr. Abernathy, I can sign a legally binding agreement, complete with the company seal."
Chad’s smile widened. "That won't be necessary. I trust you, because you are Evadne. I hope your joining us will inject new energy into the Abernathy Group. And I hope that you and I can work together to create a brighter future for both our companies."
