His Ex-Wife Is A Billionaire (Evadne and Thaddeus) novel Chapter 1253

Evadne followed Thaddeus into the study. After closing the door, she remained standing in the dim light, not bothering to turn on the lamp or take a seat on the sofa. They stood facing each other, their eyes shining in the gloom, filled with a swirling, unspoken emotion that seemed trapped just beneath the surface.

After a long moment, Evadne offered a faint smile. "Mr. Abernathy, please say what you need to. I have other things to attend to this evening." It was a clear signal that she didn't want to be alone with him.

A bitter taste filled Thaddeus’s mouth. "At the board meeting today, you didn't vote against him either," he said, his voice husky. "I wanted to know if we were thinking the same thing."

Evadne lowered her long lashes. "You didn't oppose Chad becoming CEO because you still don't know what his true endgame is. To find out what he's planning, you have to give him what he wants for now—put him on that pedestal, under the spotlight. Only then will you be able to see his every move clearly. Otherwise, he'll remain a slithering viper in the shadows, always insatiable, always unpredictable."

Thaddeus’s eyes widened slightly, his heart beating faster. He fought to keep his emotions in check. "Yes. That's exactly what I was thinking." He had found it again—that feeling that no one in the world understood him the way Evadne did.

"But you're wrong about one thing," Thaddeus said, taking a step closer until they were only inches apart.

Evadne’s breath caught. "What?"

"Even as CEO, Chad won't be satisfied." His gaze was intense, his words deliberate. "He wants to devour the entire Abernathy Group. And even that might just be a stepping stone. He wants to stand at the very top, to have all of Elmsworth bow at his feet."

Evadne’s expression grew serious, and she nodded slightly. As an ambitious person herself, she had always admired bold, visionary risk-takers. If Chad had chosen a righteous path, she might have even respected him, perhaps even befriended him. But he had done the one thing she could never forgive: he had hurt the person she loved most, time and time again.

"I received word that Alexia was released on bail," Thaddeus said, his face grim. "She's Chad's pawn, and she hates both of us. So please, be careful. Have Jason stay close. Your safety is the most important thing."

Evadne gave a faint, noncommittal smile. Nydia was due any day now, and she had given Jason time off to be with her. She wouldn't call him away from his family. She had enough strength to protect herself. She had managed on her own long before Thaddeus had entered her life.

"If you're in danger," Thaddeus added, a deep breath betraying his lingering worry, "promise me you'll call me."

Evadne paused, a sad, beautiful smile gracing her lips, like a rose blooming at midnight. Just as he was about to turn away, she spoke again, her voice low. "Mr. Abernathy, have you never once suspected Alexia’s true identity?"
