"Dad, how are you feeling today? Are you doing better?" Evadne's eyes curved into a bright, cheerful smile. She looked as innocent and carefree as she had when she was a young girl. She bounded over to Emeric, crouched down, and gently held his thin, frail hands. She knew she had grown up. She had been through too much. No matter how well she faked her smile, her dark, heavy gaze could never return to the pure clarity of her youth. Yet, she tried her hardest to act like a child, hoping to tap into her father's earliest memories. She figured that amnesia might be like Alzheimer's, where memories faded backward, erasing the present first and leaving childhood memories for last. Maybe if she acted like the teenage girl he remembered, it would spark something in his mind. The thought made a lump form in her throat, and it took everything she had not to cry. "I'm good. I'm doing quite well." Emeric stared intently at Evadne's pale but beautiful face. His heart skipped a beat. "Sweetheart, I'm so sorry. I really can't remember right now. You call me Dad, and everyone tells me you're my favorite daughter. I want to remember, but I just can't." Evadne leaned forward, resting her pale cheek on his knee. "It's okay, Dad. Take your time. It doesn't matter if it takes a year or ten years. I'll always be by your side, your perfect, obedient daughter." Dylan smiled through his tears. He thought to himself that while Ms. Evadne was loyal, she had never been 'obedient' a day in her life. This ordeal had truly forced her to grow up. Even without his memories, Emeric could feel a powerful surge of emotion building inside him. "Give me a little more time, sweetheart. I'll try my best. It will come back to me." Then, he noticed Hubery standing silently behind Evadne. Looking at the familiar yet strange face, Emeric frowned in confusion. Slowly, his expression shifted from bewilderment to shock, and his cloudy eyes sharpened. "You... you are..." "Dad, it's Hubery. Hubery is back!" Evadne choked back a sob. "He didn't die! He was the only survivor of the plane crash. God must have heard the prayers you and Suri offered every single day and finally sent him back to us!" Hubery stared at the gray-haired man in front of him. His body trembled uncontrollably. The cold, distant aura he normally carried melted away under the overwhelming warmth flooding his chest. He stood frozen as countless fragmented but vivid memories rushed into his mind. "Hubery?" Emeric looked from Hubery's tear-filled eyes to Dylan in utter shock. "Do I really have this many kids?" Dylan laughed through his tears. "You still have Aaron and Ms. Nydia to meet. Mr. Ashbourne, you have nine children." "Was I some kind of breeding stallion in my youth?" Emeric was thoroughly stunned by his own past. Dylan was left speechless.
