The family was finally reunited. Evadne and Debby embraced tightly, unable to find the words, simply weeping into each other's shoulders.
But that was the beauty of blood ties. They didn't need to speak. Even if they couldn't see each other often, their hearts were intimately connected.
"Debby, have you been to the hospital to see Suri and Hubery?"
Arnold asked, his eyes red. "Suri is still in a coma, but Hubery regained his memory. He... he finally came home."
"I know. Evadne told me over the phone."
Debby choked back a sob. "That's wonderful... truly wonderful... Hubery is alive, and our family is..."
She couldn't bring herself to say "reunited."
Because she and her husband knew perfectly well why Benedict had come to see their father. Something monumental was about to happen.
Darcy's bright eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion. The usually radiant and charismatic politician looked unspeakably haggard and much thinner.
"Evadne, Arnold, Myra, Aviana... I am so incredibly sorry. There were critical state affairs I had to handle personally. I... I couldn't be here immediately to visit Suri. It's my fault. I failed my duties."
"Don't say that, Darcy. We all understand how difficult your position is."
Evadne rubbed her eyes before asking with desperate urgency, "What exactly happened? Why is that Emperor in our house?!"
Debby and Darcy exchanged a heavy look. Their expressions were incredibly grim, as if silently asking each other who should break the news.
"Perhaps it concerns Mrs. Ashbourne, and the future heir to the Helgen throne."
A deep voice suddenly rang out.
Evadne's heart leaped, and she was the first to turn around. Thaddeus, Cassius, and Chasel were walking briskly toward them.
"C-Cassius, what happened to your eye?!" Myra and Aviana cried out in panic, staring at the gauze taped over Cassius's left eye.
"Just a minor injury. It's nothing," Cassius replied calmly, as if it truly didn't matter.
Chasel hid behind the older man, lowering his head and remaining perfectly silent.
It wasn't cowardice; he was simply overwhelmed by a suffocating guilt and heartache. Besides, Cassius had explicitly ordered him to keep the truth hidden for as long as possible.
"Thaddeus, you know what's going on on the inside, don't you?!" Evadne stepped forward and grabbed his warm hand, lacing her fingers tightly through his, refusing to let go.
Thaddeus's breath hitched. Unable to resist, he stroked the soft, delicate skin of her hand with his calloused thumb. His steady heart immediately picked up its pace:
"I have a friend within the Helgen royal court. He once helped me investigate Mrs. Ashbourne's past. Combined with my own deductions, I believe...
"The Emperor of Helgen is here to bring back a new heir. He needs to stabilize the monarchy and calm the political unrest."
Everyone was stunned. "Bring back a new heir?! Bring who back?! Who is the heir?!"
Arnold couldn't resist a sarcastic quip. "Damn, don't tell me it's me? The fortune teller did say I had the face of a king when I was a kid."
Thaddeus cast a dark, solemn glance at him. "You are one of them."
Arnold's jaw dropped. "Huh?!"
At that moment, Bennett and Elvis rushed over, catching the tail end of the conversation.
Elvis was the first to lose his temper, lunging forward. "Our mother was gentle, kind, and incredibly fragile... How could she possibly be a treasonous spy?!"
Arnold was equally stunned. "Exactly! Where's your proof?!"
The brothers bombarded him with questions, vehemently refusing to accept this reality.
Only Evadne stood rooted to the spot in a daze, her mother's gentle, breathtakingly beautiful face surfacing in her mind.
Her mother had passed away when Evadne was only four.
Those four years were brief, but the intense love her mother had showered upon her was enough to last a lifetime.
She remembered how her mother often looked deeply unhappy, standing on the balcony for hours, staring out into the distance.
So, all the clues had been there from the start.
Her mother was unhappy because she knew she could never go back. She had been permanently severed from her homeland, her relatives, and the life she once knew.
Her mother loved her children deeply.
But she may not have loved their father, which meant she had never truly been happy.
"The Emperor of Helgen suddenly showing up at your doorstep... is the proof."
Cassius took a deep breath, forcing down the violent emotional storm raging in his chest, and stared solemnly at Thaddeus. "Thaddeus, if I'm not mistaken.
"The biological father of us four brothers... is the Emperor sitting in that study right now. Isn't he?"
