Chad's health had always been frail, relying on a cocktail of medications for years. After being interrogated for over a dozen hours, he was completely exhausted. By the time he arrived at Windermere Estate, it was nearly 1 AM.
He simply didn't have the energy to deal with his father—a man who, in Chad's eyes, had never served any meaningful purpose in his life. He had never even viewed Frederic as a real father. Everything Chad did was a calculated step toward seizing total control.
So, upon arriving, Chad bypassed the study and went straight to his bedroom, leaving Holden to fend off Frederic.
He had killed too many people recently, and the sheer weight of his secrets was pushing his mind and body to their absolute limits. The moment his head hit the pillow, he fell into a deep, heavy slumber.
In his dreams, he was forced to watch his mother's suicide all over again. The bullet tore through the back of her head, and she collapsed rigidly onto the edge of the lake. Her blood seeped into the water, staining half the lake red.
As a young boy, barefoot and draped in a velvet blanket, he had stood over her lifeless body for a very long time, his face a mask of hollow apathy.
He dipped his pale feet into the freezing lake, swirling his toes through the crimson water.
He hadn't felt an ounce of fear. Instead, his mother's blood felt wonderfully warm.
From that day forward, he developed an incurable, insatiable addiction to the scent of blood.
"Sir? Sir?"
Holden's voice yanked Chad back from his gruesome, beautiful nightmare into reality.
He forced his heavy eyelids open, raising an arm to block the harsh light pouring into the room.
"What time is it?"
"Sir, it's almost noon. You slept for so long and wouldn't wake up no matter how much I called you. You really scared me."
Holden looked with deep concern at Chad's bloodless face. "You look terrible. Are you alright? Do you need your medication?"
"Holden."
Chad asked softly, his tone eerie. "Hubery betrayed me. Alexia eventually turned on me. Even my own uncle only saw me as a pawn to be discarded at his convenience.
A dark shadow crossed Chad's brow.
Holden spoke up coldly. "He just woke up. What is it?"
"Mr. Frederic is requesting your presence in the study. He has something to discuss."
Chad washed his face, changed his clothes, and unhurriedly made his way to Frederic's study, with Holden following close behind.
"Chad, what the hell is going on with your uncle's death? Why are the police knocking on your door?!" Frederic demanded immediately. He had dark circles under his eyes, clearly having stayed up all night.
Chad crossed his long legs elegantly, smiling as if nothing was wrong. "Dad, I know what you're afraid of, but there's nothing to fear. No matter how terrifying or psychotic my uncle was, he's dead now."
Frederic was furious. "Do you think I'm afraid of him? I'm furious because the police linked his death to you! You were dragged out of a board meeting by that Ashbourne cop, and now the entire city is talking about it! You're trending everywhere! The stock plummeted the second the market opened this morning. Do you have any idea how much damage this is doing to the Abernathy group?!"
Chad shrugged indifferently. "So what? The A5 Project is officially signed and in motion. With government-backed initiatives propping us up, this turbulence is only temporary."
