Everyone instinctively turned toward the approaching footsteps. A second later, Chad's expression darkened, his jaw clenching tight. Evadne and Thaddeus exchanged a shocked look before exclaiming in unison, "Aaron?!"
Aaron gave them a brief nod. Flanked by two subordinate officers, he walked straight past the crowd and stopped in front of Frederic. "Mr. Frederic, you need to come with us."
His tone was brief and cut straight to the point, yet his demeanor toward the older man remained surprisingly calm.
Frederic offered a bitter, strained smile. He turned his head, casting one last, lingering look at the closed doors of the emergency room. Then, his gaze shifted, settling with a gentle, fatherly warmth on Thaddeus and Evadne.
He just stood there, watching them in silence. One second. Two...
It was as if he were trying to memorize their faces, knowing his time was running out.
Thaddeus had never grown up with a father's care or protection. Frederic had always claimed to love Cynthia Winter the most, yet he had never given her the status she deserved while she was alive, nor had he offered her his whole heart. And as for her only son, Frederic had given him nothing but neglect, coldness, and broken promises.
It was only now, at the very end, that he realized how precious a normal relationship with his son would have been.
He didn't know if he would ever get the chance to see Thaddeus again. Even if this wasn't their final goodbye, his days were numbered.
Human nature was a cruel thing—only when someone was on the verge of losing everything did the crushing weight of regret finally hit them.
"Dad..." Thaddeus's voice was hoarse. He clearly realized what was happening, his broad shoulders trembling faintly.
Evadne's breath hitched. Her fingers twitched, her instinct screaming to reach out and take Thaddeus's hand to offer him some silent comfort.
But with Chad standing right there, she had to bury that urge, clenching her hands into tight fists.
With their greatest enemy watching their every move, the situation was far too volatile.
Even the simple act of touching Thaddeus felt like an impossible luxury.
Reluctantly, Frederic tore his bleak but resolute gaze away from his son and held out his hands toward Aaron.
Aaron studied him for a long, complicated moment before pulling out his cuffs. As the cold metal clamped securely around his wrists, Frederic's body gave an uncontrollable shudder, but he finally bowed his head in resignation.
He had been handed a life that millions could only dream of, yet he had spent it making one wrong choice after another, ultimately destroying himself and those around him.
