Breakfast the next morning felt like a negotiation I didn’t know the rules to. After the confrontation with Alessia, I’d gotten a call from Eduardo and had to leave for work.

I hadn’t been able to return home well past midnight. While I usually went to Isabella’s room and slept with her, I knew it wasn’t going to be possible tonight. Still, I went there, tried to door, only to find it locked.

Sighing, I went back to my room and slept for a few hours until was time for breakfast.

The table was set in front of me. Coffee steamed. My mother moved around the kitchen like she always did in the mornings, efficient, calm, and pretending not to notice the tension stretched tight across the room.

Isabella sat across from me.

She hadn’t said a single word since she’d walked in.

Not good morning. Not even a glance.

Mateo, however, was blissfully unaware, at least at first. He stirred sugar into his cereal with deep concentration, humming under his breath.

“Nonna,” he said suddenly, “did you know cereal tastes better when you stir it a lot?”

Caterina smiled. “I’ll take your word for it.”

Mateo looked between us, eyes narrowing slightly. Children noticed more than we gave them credit for and Mateo was definitely the most observant kid I’d ever met.

“Mamma,” he said, “why aren’t you talking to Dominic?”

The spoon in my hand stilled.

Isabella didn’t flinch. Didn’t hesitate.

“I don’t have anything to say to him,” she replied calmly.

Just like that.

No excuses. No softening.

That told me how very done she was with me this time around.arlier, whenever we fought, she made sure to keep up apperances with Mateo. But this time, she wasn’t doing that eith. She was stonewalling me like never before.

Fuck.

Mateo considered her words carefully, before nodding to himse. “Okay.”

He turned to me. “She’ll talk to you when she has something toy.”

I nodded. Because what else could I do?

“Yes,” I said quietly. “That sounds right.”

Inside, something folded in on itself.

I watched Isabella eat in silence, the way she always did when she was thinking, methodical, and contained. Like she’d already closed the door and was calmly deciding what to do with the space beyond it.

“Are you going to work today?” I asked her, forcing my voice stealy.

“Yes.”

One word.

Then, she stood and walked away.

Mateo jumped down from his chair and followed her. I stayed seated, staring at the place she’d been.

She wouldn’t even look at me.

How was I supposed to fix something if she wouldn’t let me near it?

I stood and went outside.

The car was already waiting to take them. But I signalled to Marco to get out before sitting in the driver’s seat myself. I will drive them today.

When they came out, each with their bags in hand, Mateo took off running towards the car before Isabella could say anything. He climbed into the backseat like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“I call window,” he announced.

Isabella stopped short.

For a moment, I thought she’d refuse. Thought she’d turn around and walk back into the house just to avoid sharing a car with me.

She didn’t.

She got in.

The drive was quiet until Mateo made it otherwise.

“Dominic,” he said, swinging his legs, “did you know my teacher ays rockets need math?”

“Yes,” I replied. “They do.”

“I don’t like math,” Mateo said solemnly.

“You don’t have to like it,” I said. “Just understand it.”

He nodded. “Mamma’s good at math.”

She glanced at him, a faint smile touching her lips. “I am.”

She didn’t look at me.

“Mamma,” Mateo continued, “Dominic said we could build another rocket.”

“That sounds fun,” she said.

“Will you help?”

“Of course.”

Chapter III

Not once did she acknowledge me.

When we reached the school, Mateo hopped out, waving enthusiastically. “Bye!”

“Have a good day,” Isabella said softly.

I watched her get out too and then keep walking.

“Isa,” I said, getting out quickly.

She turned on me, fury flashing sharp and sudden.

“If you think using Mateo to get me to talk to you is going to work,” she said coldly, “you’re completely wrong.”

“That wasn’t-”

“It doesn’t matter what it was,” she cut in. “Don’t do it again.”

The words stung more than I expected.

“You’re unbelievable,” she added, shaking her head. “Even now, you can’t stop trying to maneuver.”

I swallowed hard. “I wasn’t trying to manipulate you.”

“You always are,” she snapped. “That’s your problem.”

The truth of it hurt.

“Don’t walk to work because of me,” I said quietly. “Take the car. ‘ll call for another.”

I waited for hesitation. For her to say that such extreme steps weren’t necessary. That I could just drop her off today since I was already here, but not to do it again.

The Isabella I knew would’ve done something like that.

But none of that happened.

She took the keys from my hand quietly, slid into the driver’s seat, and drove away without looking back. I’d clearly fucked up big time.

I stood there long after the car disappeared, chest aching, knowing one thing with absolute clarity.

Silence was worse than anger.

And if she never spoke to me again, it was well deserved, but I wasn’t sure I could survive it.
