Chapter 114
Isabella’s POV
Everything moved too fast and not fast enough at the same time,
“Marco, help me,” I said, my voice already shaking.

He didn’t hesitate. He was beside Caterina in seconds, lifting her carefully, calling out instructions into his phone as he carried her towards the door.
“Maria!” I turned to her, my heart hammering. “Stay with Mateo
Mateo clung to my arm, his fingers digging into my sleeve. “I’m coming with you.”
I crouched in front of him immediately, forcing myself to slow down even though panic screamed through every vein in my body.
“Hey,” I said softly, cupping his face. “Listen to me, okay?”
His eyes were huge, glossy with fear. “Is Nonna going to die?”
“No,” I said firmly, even though my chest felt like it might cave in “She fainted. That’s all we know right now.”
“I want to come with you,” he insisted, his voice trembling.
“I know,” I said, brushing his hair back gently. “But hospitals are very busy places. And I need to focus only on Nonna so I can make sure she gets the best care.”
He shook his head. “I won’t bother you.”
“I know you won’t,” I said softly. “But I still wouldn’t be able to focus the way I need to. You’ll be safer here with Maria.”
Maria stepped closer, placing a steady hand on Mateo’s shoulder. “I’ll take good care of him, Isa. I promise.”
I looked back at Mateo. “I’ll call you the moment I know what’s wrong. And when Nonna wakes up, I’ll bring you to see her. Okay?”
He hesitated for a moment, but then nodded slowly. “Okay.”
I kissed his forehead, holding him for just a second longer than necessary before standing.
“Call me if you need anything,” Maria said as I rushed out.
“I will,” I replied breathlessly.
Marco was already waiting by the car, Caterina carefully laid out in the backseat. I climbed in beside her, holding her hand as the car sped away.
“Stay with me,” I whispered. “Please.”
Her skin felt cool, but when I checked her pulse, it was still there She was still breathing, her heart was still beating. That’s all the hope I needed as I urged Marco to drive faster.
When we reached the hospital, the lights in the emergency department were nearly blinding.
Everything became noise and movement, voices overlapping, wheels squeaking, hands lifting Caterina onto a gurney.

“She’s unresponsive but breathing,” someone said.
“Get her to ER. Now!”

They wheeled her away through double doors, leaving me standing there with my hands shaking and my heart lodged painfully in my throat.
I paced the waiting area, every second stretching unbearably long. I kept telling myself that she was still breathing, still alive. That had to count for something, right?
What was I going to tell Dominic if something happened to her
Dominic, God, I had to inform him.
I pulled my phone out, my thumb hovering over Dominic’s name.
Marco appeared beside me. “I already called him,” he said quietly. “He’s on his way.”
I nodded, unable to speak.
Minutes later, though it felt like hours, a doctor stepped out, scanning the room.
“Family?” he asked.
I stepped forward immediately. “I’m her daughter-in-law,” I said the words pouring out of me before I could stop myself.
He nodded. “She’s stable now.”
The words hit me like air after drowning.
“She had a sudden drop in blood sugar levels,” he continued. “That caused the fainting. We’ve administered medication and are monitoring her. She should wake up soon.”
My knees nearly gave out in relief.
“It was very good that you brought her in immediately,” he added. “Had there been a delay, she could’ve slipped into a
coma.”
I sucked in a shaky breath, tears spilling freely now.
That was when I felt it, someone behind me, close enough that I could sense them before I saw them.
“What happened?” Dominic’s voice was tight, urgent.
He’d arrived in time to hear the last part.
The doctor turned to him as Dominic stepped forward. “And you are?”
“Her son,” Dominic said hoarsely.
The doctor repeated the explanation.
I watched Dominic’s face as the fear drained from it, replaced by something raw and shaken.
He turned to me suddenly and pulled me into his arms.
“Thank you,” he whispered over and over. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
I wrapped my arms around him without thinking, my own body trembling now that the adrenaline was fading.

Chapter 114
“She’s okay.” I murmured, as much to myself as to him. “She’s going to be okay.”
We pulled apart slowly.
“I need to call Mateo,” I said immediately. “He must be terrified.
Dominic nodded. “Of course.”
I dialed, my heart still racing.
“Mamma?” Mateo answered instantly.
“Hey,” I said softly. “Nonna’s okay.”
“She is?” His voice broke with relief.

“Yes,” I said, smiling through tears. “She fainted because her sugar dropped, but the doctors fixed it. She’s going to wake up soon.”
“Can I see her?”
“As soon as she wakes up.” I promised. “I’ll have someone bring you here, okay?”
“Okay,” he said. “Tell her I love her.”
“I will.”
When I hung up, I pressed the phone to my chest, breathing deeply.
For the first time in days, I let myself lean into the warmth beside me.
Whatever was broken between Dominic and me, for this moment, fear had stripped it bare.
And we were standing in the same place, holding on to the same hope.
