Chapter 115

Isabella’s POV

Caterina woke up slowly, like someone surfacing from deep water.

For a terrifying second, I almost thought she wouldn’t.

I stood frozen beside the bed, my hands clenched so tightly together that my fingers hurt, afraid that if I moved, if I breathed too loudly, I might somehow disturb the fragile balance keeping her here with us.

Then her lashes fluttered.

A soft sound escaped my throat before I could stop it. Relief hit me so hard my knees nearly buckled.

“Oh, thank God,” I whispered.

“There we are,” the doctor said gently, stepping closer. “Welcome back, Caterina.”

She blinked, confusion clouding her gaze. “What…happened?”

“You fainted,” he explained calmly. “Your blood sugar dropped suddenly.”

Her brows drew together. “But I don’t have diabetes.”

“You’re borderline,” he said kindly. “Pre-diabetic. It’s likely been developing quietly for a while.”

The word quietly lodged itself in my chest.

Of course it had. Caterina was the kind of woman who never complained, who brushed off fatigue as age, who fed everyone else before herself, who did so much for others that she forgot to take care of herself. Of course she hadn’t realized how serious it was.

“At this stage,” the doctor continued, “you won’t need regular medication. But you will need to monitor your blood glucose levels daily.”

He explained about the glucose monitor, the strict diet, the need for light exercise and consistency. His voice was steady, reassuring, but all I could hear was what he wasn’t saying.

That this could’ve been worse. That we were lucky.

“And if she isn’t careful?” I asked quietly, my voice betraying me despite my efforts.

He met my eyes with gentle honesty. “Then it could progress. At that point, we’d need to consider medication.”

I nodded slowly, unease curling in my stomach at his words.

Dominic shifted beside me. I felt the tension in him without looking, his fear tightly leashed, barely contained.

“But,” the doctor added quickly, “caught early, managed properly, people live very full lives. She’s fine now, but I would still like to keep her here overnight for observation. If all goes well, you can take her home tomorrow morning.”

I nodded, even as my heart pounded.

After he left, silence settled over the room.

Caterina exhaled slowly. “So,” she said lightly, “I was careless.”

I turned to her, emotion surging too fast for me to control.

“What were you thinking?” I blurted out.

She startled, then smiled faintly. “I wasn’t.”

“That’s the problem,” I said, my voice trembling despite my attempt to keep it firm. “You scared us. You scared me.”

I swallowed hard, blinking back tears. “You can’t do that. You can’t just ignore your body. You have to take care of yourself now. No overexerting. No skipping meals. You have to be good.

Dominic let out a quiet, almost fond sound. “You’re being scolded.”

“I see that,” Caterina murmured, seemingly amused.

But then, Dominic sobered immediately, squeezing her hand. “But she’s right, Mama. You have to take this seriously. You keep skipping your half yearly doctor visits. If you had gone the last time like I asked you to instead of being stubborn about it, this probably wouldn’t have happened.”

She nodded, her gaze softening. “I will be careful from now on, and go to all my doctor visits timely,” she said. Then, in a more teasing tone, she added, “Though if I had, I wouldn’t have known how much the two of you care about me.”

I shook my head at her. “If you want to know how much we love you, I’ll tell it to you every single day. Don’t go scaring us like this ever again.”

Caterina chuckled lightly at my reply before nodding.

Later, they moved her to a private room. The atmosphere there was gentler, filtered sunlight, softer sounds, less urgency humming in the air.

Mateo burst in like a ray of light. Dominic had probably had someone bring him here to meet his Nonna.

“Nonna!” he cried, scrambling to her side.

Her face lit up instantly. “There’s my brave boy.”

“I was really scared,” he admitted, his voice small. “You have to be careful now.”

“I promise,” she said, kissing his forehead.

Watching them, my chest ached with something that felt dangerously close to peace.

Dinner came. Caterina ate the bland hospital food, offering some to us. I told her I would have something from the cafeteria later. Once she was done, Dominic stood, adjusting his jacket.

It was an almost unspoken agreement that I was going to be spending the night here with Caterina. We hadn’t talked about it, but even if Dominic had said something, I would’ve stayed anyway.

“We’ll come back early tomorrow,” he told her, grabbing Mateo hand. “We’ll take you home.”

She waved him off gently. “Go. Both of you.”

When they left, the room grew quiet again, but not empty.

Caterina turned her head towards me. “Thank you”

I shook my head. “I would’ve done the same for my own mother

She studied me for a long moment, then said softly, “Dominic isn’t a bad man. He just makes more mistakes than average.”

I looked down at my hands, the truth of that pressing heavy against my ribs. “I know.”

“If you can,” she continued gently, “give him a chance.”

I swallowed. “I’ll think about it.”

She smiled faintly. “That’s all I ask.”

I helped her settle back, pulling the blanket up around her shoulders. “Rest now.”

As she closed her eyes, I remained seated beside her, listening to the steady rhythm of the monitor.

For the first time in hours, the fear loosened its grip just enough for me to breathe properly again.

She was fine now. She would be fine with a good diet and some exercise. She wasn’t my mother, no, but the way she had treated me back when I had gone to her place in Sicily and these past couple of days here had felt as if I had a mother again.

And I didn’t want to lose her. Not like this. Hopefully, not ever.
