Kaia POV
I feel like I have been on a rollercoaster this last week. After the attack with Ronan and the rogues, Adrian has been at the pack hospital day and night with Amber. Sinclair and I have been looking for all possibilities leading to Ronan. Half of the Blackstone warriors were left behind at Ironclaw. Isaiah spoke to the council, explained what had happened, and then asked for assistance in recruiting warriors.
We can’t put off going back to the human city any longer, and it is leaving both of us uneasy. Sinclair has agreed to come with us to the human city to assist in everything she can regarding the company, my father, Ronan, and Mr. Fellman.
Isaiah is bringing his work stuff with him so he can continue working. Plus, he wants to review Black Enterprises' financial records to see if there are any gaps in the pack's funding.
Before we left, Alpha Max and Paul discussed their exit strategy with Isaiah and me, and they will leave shortly after we return. The rest of the warriors and pack members have finally cooled their nerves about Aric, and he is feeling better about the whole situation now. I think that the pack questioning him was weighing on him more than anything. With everyone calming down, his stress level seems to be coming down, too.
Titan is still growing. I’m not quite four months yet. I have plenty of time before I give birth. I feel like I am carrying a semi-truck, though. I hope our future pups aren’t giant pups. My cravings are getting weirder, according to Isaiah. He now carries nausea medication with him. Not for me, but for him. He said this single piece of advice from his brother has been a lifesaver.
We finally arrive at the airfield, and Isaiah, Sinclair, and I all get on the jet.
“Ready?” Isaiah asked.
“Yeah. Mr. Fellman is expecting us when we land,” I said. “He said it’s urgent we speak. He didn’t want to discuss it over the phone, though.”
Isaiah nodded. Sinclair looks lost in thought. All week, her mind has seemed distant. I’m not sure why, though.
Isaiah got up to use the restroom after we took off, and I took the moment to talk to Sinclair.
“Girl, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she said.
“Oh, it’s something. Spill.”
She sighed. “I was thinking about where I can find Ronan. I’m undecided about him. That’s Aric’s father and my family’s murderer. Not to mention the same man who plotted against the Willises. I worry how my relationship with Aric will be if I kill his father.”
“I understand you might feel apprehensive. Thalia’s dad was a real bastard, Sinclair. My dad is a real bastard, too. Aiden finished off Diego, and Thalia loves him even deeper now. Unless the evidence points elsewhere, my dad tried to take out a hit on me. If you think about everything from a different lens, you will see that this isn’t much different. All the men in question have done more harm than good.”
Sinclair sat back in her seat and contemplated my words. “You’re right. I guess I’m nervous because I don’t want to lose the only blood-related family I have.”
“Do I need a reason?” she asked.
“I could say no, but there is always a reason to make a decision to want to be single. No matter if you are wolf or human, we are hardwired to want to be with someone.”
“I’m hardwired to being alone, Isaiah. I keep very few close friends. You know that. I’m respected in two packs, and I have my work and a nephew coming that will keep me busy. I’m not someone who needs to have a partner to feel fulfilled in life. I wanted to know who I was and where I came from. Now that I do, I’m content and can continue carrying on behind the scenes."
I listen to Sinclair’s words and realize that beneath everything, there is a layer of uncertainty in her tone. I think she is scared to be mated, so she is resisting the idea.
We finally made it to our destination, and true to his word, Mr. Fellman was there to pick us up. He was using a walking cane and had an assistant with him. His face looked tired and gaunt, as if he had had a lot of restless nights.
“Mrs. Willis, it’s good to see you again,” Mr. Fellman began. “Let’s get out of here quickly and to my office.”
He looks scared. He’s a barracuda. He doesn’t get scared. I nodded, and Isaiah, Sinclair, and I followed Mr. Fellman and his assistant. We got to his car, a massive SUV, and climbed in.
As soon as we were inside, Mr. Fellman looked at me, seriously. “Your father needs to stay in prison, Kaia.”
