Adrian POV
For a week, I have been by Amber’s side. Her wounds have healed slowly. She still looks pale, but at least her injuries have healed. The doctor said that he was going to wake Amber up today.
“Alpha Adrian, I don’t know how much more time your mate will need to be here, once I wake her up. The wounds and incision scars have all healed, which means her wolf is still present. Your wolf being here, I’m sure, has helped too. I have heard from a few folks around the pack that you plan on rejecting your mate. Is this true?”
News travels fast, apparently. I looked down. I have thought long and hard about the rejection. Thor and I agree it’s the right thing to do. It still hurts, though.
“Yes, doctor.”
“Then, before I wake her, I must advise you to wait on the rejection. Once I wake her, I will be able to assess her pain and continuing recovery. Rejecting her too soon could still be fatal for her. We have administered blood thinners since black blood can form blood clots. I don’t want to risk injuring her further than necessary. I would also say that once we get her to a point in her recovery where she can withstand the rejection, we have staff nearby to help her work through the pain of rejection. She is not out of the woods yet, though.”
“Understood, doc. I will wait for you to give me an assessment before I reject her,” I replied.
The doctor woke Amber, and after a while, her eyelids fluttered. I heard her groan, and then something in my chest loosened. She survived. What comes next will be done later. I will feel better walking away from her once she is fully recovered.
She slowly opened her eyes and looked around the room. When her eyes landed on me, relief flashed in her eyes, followed by slow tears falling down her cheek.
"Amber, I’m Dr. Levi. How are you feeling?”
Her voice is hoarse as she replies, “Water.”
I got up and brought a bottle to her lips. “Slowly,” I said.
She is still looking at me. There is a small spark of hope in her eyes. Seeing that hope makes me feel guilty.
‘We are rejecting her, Adrian,’ Thor said. ‘This will always be over us. The trust is gone. You and I both know it.’
‘I know. My decision is firm, Thor.’
The doctor examined Amber and asked her a series of questions. When everything was said and done, I walked outside with the doctor. He looked at me with some concern.
She fidgeted with her fingers. “My father told me that no man speaks to another beautiful woman unless there is interest. I saw you looking at that woman the way you looked at me every day, and I thought you were entertaining the idea of having another woman. You put your arm around her, and I remembered how you would do that with me. I thought…I thought you were growing tired of me. You promised to love me, and then I saw you treating her the way you treated me. I felt betrayed. It was irrational, but I believed what my father had said to me when I saw you walk away with that woman.”
I sat back. I know what moment she is talking about. I was planning a surprise with her. I was showing the woman how I hold Amber and how I looked at her. I wanted to incorporate it into the surprise so it felt natural and unrehearsed. She saw it and mistook everything.
“Still, you never confronted me. If you had confronted me, I would have explained everything. We wouldn’t be where we are now.”
She continued looking down and fidgeting with her fingers. “I know Adrian. I’m sorry. I should have trusted you and our mate bond, and I didn’t. There were never betrayal pains from you.”
“But you did betray me, Amber. Not just my family, but ME. You slept with Ronan. He’s twice your age, and you signed your fate over to him. You were so upset with me that you wanted to sentence my family. What’s worse is that you willingly did these things. It doesn’t sound like Ronan put a gun to your head, did he?”
“No,” she said quietly.
“Exactly. I never gave you reasons, aside from that one time, to make you doubt me or feel insecure about our relationship. You didn’t have any faith in me to talk to me. I am so heartbroken and disillusioned, Amber,” I finished and then stood up. “I’m going to the pack house to clean up and eat. I may stay there tonight. I need space from this hospital. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
Before she could say anything else, I turned on my heel and walked out of the room. I heard her sob in the distance, but I can’t bring myself to care at the moment. My heart is crying, and it’s been crying for two years. She didn’t care then, and I don’t care now.
