To reassure Annika, Layla had brought all her investment firm's official credentials. After a careful review, Annika found everything in order, and they quickly signed the investment agreement.
——
As dusk fell, Annika drove away from the Sargent Group. An Audi, appearing from a side street, began to tail her, maintaining a constant, close distance. It followed her all the way to the gates of Scent Haven before finally driving off. Conrad was still worried about her, she thought. Worried she’d run away with his child.
Annika turned off the engine, got out of the car, and walked into the villa. She scrolled through her phone, checking for messages, when a trending headline flashed across the screen: “Disabled Woman Assaulted by Four Men in Eirlandia.” An inside source revealed that the woman was incredibly wealthy and was the untouchable woman in the heart of a powerful man.
Though no names were mentioned, anyone could guess that the “powerful man” was Conrad and the “disabled woman” was Serena. The woman's face in the accompanying photo was pixelated, but she was still instantly recognizable. The distinctive purple down coat was a dead giveaway—only Serena had such a fondness for the color.
While Annika disliked Serena, even verging on hatred, she found the act of exposing her private trauma to be despicable.
——
That evening, Conrad returned, his expression cold. Serena was with him, her eyes red and swollen from crying, her face as pale as a ghost’s. Lacey immediately wheeled her into a guest room. Soon after, the sound of suppressed, desolate sobs drifted from Serena’s room, casting a gloomy pall over the entire villa.
Conrad loosened his tie and took off his jacket without a single glance at Annika, then went out to the terrace to smoke.
