His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 128

Back in high school, Annika and Wayne had barely spoken. But professionally, as the head of Sargent Group, she felt obligated to check on an employee who had gotten into trouble on her watch. If she didn't, it would send a chilling message to the rest of her staff.

Annika visited Wayne at the detention center. He asked her assistant, Harvey, for a cigarette and smoked it down to the filter, refusing to say a word. When he finally finished, he looked at Annika.

“Ms. Sargent, please find Jordan for me. Tell him I’m begging. If I can get out of here, I’ll be at his beck and call for the rest of my life.”

Wayne was smart enough to know Annika couldn't pull the strings to get him out. Even if she could, he wasn't worth the effort.

Annika didn’t press for more details and left with Harvey.

She dialed the number Wayne had given her for Jordan.

Jordan hadn’t wanted to get involved, but since Annika was calling, he agreed to meet. Annika relayed Wayne’s message, and Jordan looked at her with a deeply meaningful gaze. “Annika, are you telling me you really don’t know how Wayne ended up in this mess?”

Annika frowned at his familiar tone.

“We’re not that close.”

Jordan just smiled, unsure if she was genuinely clueless or just pretending not to know about his connection to Conrad.

Since she denied it, he guessed there might be some trouble between her and Conrad. That would explain their lukewarm interaction at the karaoke bar the night before; they certainly hadn't acted like a normal married couple.

Jordan considered for a moment. “I can’t do anything about Wayne.”

It wasn't that he couldn't, but that he didn't dare. He couldn't tell her that, of course.

As soon as he spoke, he saw the look in Annika’s eyes change. It was strange, tinged with a hint of disdain. Unable to bear her contempt, Jordan tried to explain, “I don’t have any connections on the inside…”
