Annika had offered sincerity and had it thrown back in her face. Fine. If that’s how they wanted to play, she could be ruthless too.
She looked at Wayne, her vibrant lips parting slightly. “I can help you, but you’ll pledge ten years of your life to serving Sargent Group.”
She was asking for a decade of his life, essentially having him sign his future away. Wayne gritted his teeth. “Fine.”
He had his own calculations. If Sargent Group went under, he’d be free. Either way, it was better than rotting in this sunless place.
Seeing him agree so quickly, Annika added another condition. “And you will have no further contact with Estelle.”
“Of course!” Wayne rolled his eyes. Who would want anything to do with that bitch? He hated her guts.
“Wayne, I’m not afraid of you trying any more tricks,” Annika said, her tone deliberately heavy. “In a couple of days, I think I’ll go visit your mother.”
Her emphasis on ‘your mother’ sent a cold sweat down Wayne’s back. He had thought she was some innocent, sheltered princess, but she was more calculating than anyone he knew. He had no choice but to agree. “Fine.”
With their deal struck, Annika turned to leave. “You have to be quick!” Wayne shouted after her. “I can’t stand it in here.”
The place reeked of mold and decay, and he didn't want to spend another second there.
Annika didn’t look back, simply giving him a wave.
Instead of returning to the hotel, Annika went straight to the hospital to visit the person Wayne had hit. The victim was a young, beautiful woman with fair skin and long legs. Her arm was in a cast, and she lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. The woman attending to her seemed to be a maid, not a nurse, because Annika heard her address the patient as ‘Miss’ when she entered.
The woman’s eyes shifted from the ceiling to Annika, then to the bouquet of roses in her hands.
