Annika returned from a project site inspection with Harvey, Wayne, and a landscape architect. She instructed the architect to draft the plans as soon as possible for the Sargent Group's senior management to review.
Wayne and Harvey's rooms were on a lower floor, so after they all got into the elevator, it stopped at the 24th floor. The three men said their goodbyes, and Annika pressed the button for her floor.
"Hold the elevator!"
An overpowering wave of perfume hit her first, followed by a stunning woman who swept into the car. The woman's eyes were accentuated with sharp eyeliner, and she carried herself with such arrogance that she didn't even glance at Annika.
The elevator doors closed, and the silver numbers on the wall began to climb. On the 28th floor, the elevator opened, and the woman strode out ahead of Annika.
As Annika stepped out, she looked up to see the glamorous woman standing at Conrad's door, raising her hand to knock.
Annika froze for a second, then a mocking smile touched her lips. She had been with Conrad for two years; she knew exactly how strong his physical needs were. He didn't need feelings to be with someone. But still…
Sensing Annika's gaze, the woman shot her a look, let out a cold sneer, and arrogantly turned away.
With a faint smile, Annika fished the key card from her purse and swiped it. Just as she stepped into her room, she heard the door next to hers open.
"Mr. Beryl," the woman's voice was a sweet, cooing sound.
Annika didn't look back, instead kicking her own door shut. As it clicked closed, she clearly heard Conrad's low, sexy voice. "What took you so long?"
Through the door, the woman's sugary voice drifted into her ears again. "I know, I'm sorry. It was that awful taxi driver. He must have thought I looked rich, so he totally ripped me off. Mr. Beryl, you have to…"
The woman's playful complaints were cut off by the sound of his door closing.
Annika leaned her entire back against her own door, the key card in her palm nearly bending under the pressure. She closed her eyes, trying to calm the frantic beating of her heart, and inserted the card into the slot. The dim room was instantly flooded with bright light.
