The moment Conrad arrived at the office, his secretary informed him that Wayne from Sargent Group was waiting for his signature.
“I’m not seeing him,” he snapped.
The secretary, Ms. Sutton, felt the arctic chill radiating from Conrad and didn’t dare ask why. She could only wonder who had managed to provoke their CEO, guessing that no one in the executive office was going to have a peaceful day.
Waiting outside, Wayne spotted the secretary and hurried over. “Ms. Sutton, has Mr. Beryl arrived? I saw his car.”
Ms. Sutton knew she couldn't fool him. “He’s here,” she answered cautiously, “but… Mr. Beryl seems to be in a very bad mood. Wayne, maybe you should wait a bit longer.”
Wayne grew anxious. He pleaded with Ms. Sutton, but she just shrank away. He considered forcing his way in, but Nolan blocked his path. Left with no other choice, Wayne called Annika.
“Ms. Sargent, the project has already launched, and we need the initial investment capital from Beryl Group. Since it’s a joint venture, their finance department says they need Mr. Beryl’s personal signature to release the funds, but he’s refusing to see me.”
Wayne expected Annika to be just as anxious, but instead, she simply said, “Then just let it be for now.”
He thought he must have misheard. “Let it be?”
“Yes,” she confirmed, and before Wayne could say anything else, she hung up.
Wayne was completely baffled. Annika and Conrad were ex-spouses, and in the business world, Conrad was famously impartial. Yet, the very fact that Sargent Group had won the bid proved he wasn't entirely indifferent to her. The problem was, she didn’t seem to realize it.
Wayne sighed in frustration. He had to go talk some sense into her. Just as he reached the ground floor of the Beryl Group building, he ran into Annika herself, who was rushing in with a frantic look on her face.
“Ms. Sargent,” he said, his own anxieties immediately easing. “I thought you weren’t worried, but it seems I was wrong.”
He was about to follow her upstairs to confront Conrad together, but she stopped him. “He won’t sign it. You should go back for now.”
