Conrad helped Yazmin walk away, but after a few steps, he paused. Turning his head slowly, his voice laced with menace, he said, "Don't bother us again. Otherwise, there will be no place for you in Seafall City."
Zander was furious, but his son's authority cowed him. He stood frozen, unable to move, stunned into silence.
Conrad helped his mother into the passenger seat, then opened the back door for Annika. He got in after her, and once the door was shut, Nolan started the engine. The moment the car pulled onto the road, Yazmin began to complain incessantly. "What is wrong with him? He'd rather suffer with that hussy than come home. Conrad, Zoey even hit Annika today! You have to make her pay for that."
Listening to Yazmin's indignant words, Annika knew she was deliberately blaming Zoey for hitting her. Yazmin had two motives: first, to protect Zander and prevent his relationship with Conrad from worsening, and second, to make Conrad despise Zoey, hoping he would secretly retaliate against her.
Annika didn't bother to correct her.
Hearing his mother, Conrad's gaze immediately fell on Annika. "Zoey hit you?" he asked.
Catching Yazmin looking back at her from the corner of her eye, Annika gave a slight nod.
"Where did she hit you?" Conrad's tone was harsh. As he spoke, he gripped her chin and turned her face toward him. Annika met his cold eyes, startled. She shook her head slightly and gently removed his hand from her chin. "I dodged it."
Before she could finish, Yazmin interjected, "You ducked your head, but her fist still caught your face. Conrad, check on Annika! See if she's hurt!"
Suddenly sensing an opportunity to bring her son and daughter-in-law closer, Yazmin eagerly urged him on.
Conrad glanced down at Annika's hand covering his. He turned his palm over, enveloping her small hand in his. His voice softened. "Let me see."
The husky timbre of his voice made the tips of Annika's ears turn red.
Conrad remained silent, his lips pressed together. Yazmin playfully punched his chest twice, feigning anger. "Anyway, for the rest of my life, Annika is the only daughter-in-law I'll ever accept. Break it off with anyone else you have on the side."
With that, Yazmin turned and walked away.
Conrad felt wronged. He didn't have anyone on the side. She was completely mistaken.
Even though the front passenger seat was now empty, Conrad deliberately chose to squeeze into the back with Annika instead.
Conrad looked at Annika with a meaningful expression and instructed Nolan, "Back to Scent Haven."
Annika quickly interjected, "Nolan, please take me back to the Sargent Villa first. Monroe will be looking for me."
