The name 'Monroe' seemed to work like a charm. Seeing Conrad's silence, Nolan gave a soft "Mm," and the car sped toward the Sargent Villa.
When the car stopped, Annika got out, and Conrad followed. "You go on ahead," he told Nolan.
Nolan understood immediately, hit the gas, and drove away.
Hearing the engine roar into the distance, Annika turned around just in time to see the Cayenne's taillights disappearing. She stopped and looked at the impassive man before her. "Why didn't you leave?"
Conrad shrugged. "Why should I leave?"
His wife and son were here. Why would he go anywhere else?
Conrad brushed past Annika and started walking toward the villa. She quickly stepped in front of him. "Hey, Conrad! Monroe is already asleep at this hour. If you don't want to wake him, you shouldn't go in."
Conrad glanced inside, then his gaze returned to Annika's face, looking down at her. "I'm not going to wake him. I just want to ask you something."
With that, Conrad walked around her and headed straight for the villa.
Seeing that Conrad wouldn't listen, Annika stomped her foot and hurried after him. By the time she caught up, he was already knocking. Lana opened the door and was startled to see Conrad. She looked from him to Annika, unsure whether to let him in. While she hesitated, Conrad unceremoniously pushed past her and strode inside as if he owned the place.
Lana looked at Annika, who seemed helpless, and stepped aside. "Monroe's asleep," she said, heading toward the kitchen. "I'm going to wash the clothes he just changed out of."
Annika ignored Lana, her eyes fixed on Conrad, who was heading upstairs, loosening his tie as he went. Panic set in. She rushed forward and grabbed his arm. "Conrad, you can't go up there!"
Conrad raised an eyebrow, looking amused at her frantic expression. "I'm going to see my son. Why can't I?"
He settled into the sofa. Noticing that Annika was keeping her distance, he frowned slightly, a flicker of displeasure on his face. He patted the spot next to him. "Sit here," he commanded.
Annika remained standing.
"Conrad, it's too late. We need to rest. Can we talk about this tomorrow?"
Annika's refusal annoyed him. "I want to talk about it today."
"Annika, my mother told me you took a punch from Zoey for her. I just asked you to sit here so I could look at your injury. Relax. I’m not here to start a fight."
Annika was growing frustrated. "I already told you, it's nothing."
