Annika thought the lawyer was worried about his fee. “Mr. Judd, you don’t need to worry about payment. I’ll pay your hourly rate.”

Mr. Judd sighed. “Ms. Sargent, it’s not that I don’t want to help, but a case of this magnitude is beyond my capabilities. For something involving Mr. Sargent, you need a top-tier firm. You should try asking Conrad Beryl for help. As you know, the best lawyers in Seafall City all work for the Beryl Group.”

Annika left the law firm and had just gotten into the driver’s seat when her phone rang. The name ‘Yazmin’ flashed on the screen. She hesitated for a moment before answering.

Before she could speak, Yazmin’s urgent voice came through the line. “Annika, where are you?”

“I’m driving. Is something wrong?”

“I need you to come to the manor. There’s something I want to talk to you about.”

“Alright.”

Annika guessed Yazmin had found out about the divorce. She hadn't seen Conrad's mother since Zoltan's birthday party and spent the drive trying to figure out how to break the news to her.

When Annika arrived at the Beryl Manor, a servant was already waiting at the door to escort her to Yazmin’s sitting room.

The moment Yazmin saw her, the lines on her brow deepened. She wordlessly handed Annika a velvet box. “Open it.”

Playing the victim to win sympathy was Serena’s favorite game.

Annika was silent for a moment before speaking, her tone polite but distant. “Yazmin, I’m very grateful for how you’ve cared for me these past two years. But there are some things in life we just can’t force.”

Having said that, Yazmin seemed to realize there was nothing more she could do to stop her. She looked utterly defeated. “Annika, Conrad isn’t as heartless as he seems. I know my own son. He’s just too proud.”

Yazmin trailed off. Yesterday, after Hank had told her about the divorce, she had ordered her son to come home, but he’d used work as an excuse to avoid her. That was why she’d called Annika, hoping to mediate. She never expected Annika to be so resolute.
