His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 42

Annika quietly changed into mourning clothes and knelt before her father’s portrait. With her head bowed, she began to silently acknowledge the guests who had come to pay their respects.

There weren’t many. Aside from a few relatives who weren’t completely heartless, there were only a handful of loyal Sargent Group employees who had benefited from Marcus’s kindness. The rest were there only because of her status as Mrs. Beryl.

Everyone knew that although Annika and Conrad were divorced, his attentive behavior since Marcus's death led them to speculate that the baby she was carrying was likely his. After all, a man as dominant as Conrad would never raise another man's child. So folks still thought of her as Mrs. Beryl.

“Annika, my dear. Life must go on. I’m so sorry for your loss.”

Annika looked up at the sound of the gentle voice and saw Serena, impeccably dressed and made up, sitting in her wheelchair. Pushing her was a graceful, well-preserved woman—Serena’s mother and Annika’s aunt, Yelena. It was Yelena who had spoken.

Annika’s gaze shifted from Yelena to Serena, her expression turning to ice. “My father wouldn’t want to see you,” she said, her voice firm. “Please leave.”

“Annika, my mother came all the way from Elden Country just to see your father one last time,” Serena said, a cold smile playing on her lips as she glanced around the sparsely filled hall. “Look how few people bothered to come. In this day and age, who else is as loyal and caring as our family? Don’t be so ungrateful.”

“Loyal and caring?” Annika repeated, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “My father can’t afford such loyalty. Get out.”

Yelena’s eyes welled up. “Annika,” she choked out, “whatever issues you have with Serena, our generation never had any problems. Can’t you just let me light a candle for your father?”

Annika had no patience for their theatrics. She turned to Hank and gave a direct order. “Hank, get them out of here.”
