His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 60

Hank was overcome with remorse. He helped Annika into a chair and said guiltily, “Mrs. Beryl, I didn’t mean to.”

Even though her body was trembling from the pain, Annika managed a small smile. “I know you didn’t. I forgive you.”

That delay was all it took. Conrad, having already spoken to Beth downstairs, was on his way up. Just as Hank was about to turn and leave, he heard the distinct sound of footsteps approaching—each one seeming to land directly on his heart. It was too late to escape now. Knowing it was pointless to blame Annika, Hank frantically began scanning the room for a place to hide.

But before he could find one, the door swung open. At the same instant, Annika launched herself at him, throwing her arms around his waist and clinging to him tightly.

Hank tried to push her away, but she held on. When he turned his head, his eyes met Conrad’s, which were wide with astonishment. Perhaps Conrad hadn't expected to walk into his own room and find his wife embracing another man.

The initial shock quickly faded, and Conrad’s dark eyes narrowed, a dangerous, furious glint igniting within them.

Hank finally managed to peel Annika’s hands off him. As cold sweat dripped from his nose, he rushed to explain, “Mr. Beryl, Mrs. Beryl said she couldn’t find the candles, so she asked me to bring some up. She made you a candlelight dinner. I… I won’t disturb you.”

Conrad’s powerful presence was suffocating. Hank felt the pressure in the room drop so low he thought he might freeze solid. He shivered, and with a heart full of dread, he sidestepped Conrad, exited the room, and walked straight downstairs.

With Hank gone, only Annika and Conrad remained in the small room.
