His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 77

Annika spun the steering wheel, heading back toward the Sargent Villa.

What she didn't see was the black Cayenne pulling over about two hundred yards down the road. The door flew open, and the actress tumbled out, hitting the pavement with a piercing scream. Just as she tried to scramble to her feet, the car sped away, leaving her in a cloud of dust.

"Mr. Beryl…" she cried out. How could a woman as beautiful as her fail to capture Conrad's attention?

The black Cayenne tore through the streets and pulled up at Beryl Group headquarters. Conrad stormed out of the car and strode into his office. He ripped off his tie, slamming it onto the desk, and undid several buttons on his shirt, but he still couldn't seem to breathe. The moment he saw that man with his arm around Annika, Conrad was seized by an incredible, primal sense that his territory had been violated. He had an overwhelming urge to tear the man limb from limb.

He lit a cigarette and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the glittering city lights. He took a long drag, releasing a cloud of smoke, which finally eased the tightness in his chest. A moment later, he returned to his desk and pressed the intercom, summoning his new assistant, Nolan.

"Mr. Beryl," Nolan said, entering the office.

"Look into the president of Aspen Bank."

"Right away."

Thirty minutes later, Harrison’s file was in Conrad’s hands. Harrison, originally from the South, former special-operations officer…

Conrad’s sharp brows knitted together. Suddenly, the cigarette in his hand snapped in two.

The next day, Annika saw the news that Harrison had been arrested. She immediately called Hank, who booked the first flight from Yaleton City. When he and Annika went to the prison to visit Harrison, he refused to see them. Instead, he had a guard relay a message: "Hank, as of today, our friendship is over."

The meaning was clear: his arrest was connected to helping Annika. A cold sweat broke out on Hank’s brow. "What happened last night?" he asked her.

Annika thought for a moment. "Harrison left the Crown Diner with some woman, and then I left right after. Nothing happened!"

Then, a flash of Conrad’s cold, imposing figure crossed her mind. Her heart dropped, and the color drained from her face.

"What is it, Annika?" Hank asked, reaching out to steady her.

Annika pressed a hand to her forehead, feeling as if her blood was flowing backward. "Hank," she said, her voice trembling, "you never should have helped me."

"It was Mr. Beryl, wasn't it?" Hank asked.

Annika’s lips, pressed tightly together, wouldn't stop shaking. She couldn't be sure, but she knew it was the most likely explanation.
