"Met him a few times. We're not friends," Justin replied.
"I want to cut him off at the knees. Make sure he can never get back up," Conrad said, his tone ruthless.
Justin laughed. "What did he do to you? Why so vicious?"
"That helicopter of Vincent's… Hank flew it a few days ago," Conrad said slowly, his voice measured.
"Conrad, are you going after Hank?"
Conrad brushed a stray lock of hair from his forehead, a cold smile playing on his lips. "He's not my assistant anymore. This is the path he chose."
Justin was sharp. He didn't need any more explanation to understand what Conrad wanted. They were close friends, after all.
"Alright, don't worry. Taking care of Hank will be easy," Justin said, his laugh laced with a chilling venom.
...
Annika was folding newly bought baby clothes when her phone buzzed. It was a call from Hank.
She answered, but there was only silence on the other end. Thinking she might have misread the caller ID, she checked the screen again. It was definitely Hank's number. "Hank, is everything okay?" she asked slowly.
Another long pause followed. Just as Annika thought he'd hung up, Hank's hoarse voice finally came through. "Annika, can I see you one last time?"
Her intuition told her something was seriously wrong.
"Where are you?" she asked.
Meanwhile, Hank, hidden in a corner, watched her turn away. He looked down at the 'Okay' on his screen, and tears welled up, blurring his vision as they fell onto the phone.
His face was bruised and his body was covered in injuries. They weren't life-threatening, but he was afraid of worrying Annika. Still, he had desperately wanted to see her one last time, which was why he had called.
Watching her figure recede into the distance, Hank was overcome with sadness.
"Annika, if fate allows, I'll come back for you," he whispered.
He had to leave. Otherwise, he'd end up in prison for being unable to pay the huge settlement. The helicopter he'd borrowed from Vincent had been in an accident an hour ago. Vincent was now pursuing legal action and had also sent thugs after him. Hank had fought them off but had taken a beating. His only choice was to leave Seafall City.
And so began Hank's life on the run.
