Eli nodded. "I won't." She smiled faintly. "You sound just like Mrs. Althea."
Joshua let out a soft snort. "I just don't understand why you had to choose a university that far away."
Joshua's tone made Eli smile faintly. She knew the man was not actually angry. Joshua simply did not like the fact that they were no longer in the same place as they had been before.
And that was how Eli's new life began.
Her first days at Raven University were filled with things that were entirely new to her. A busier class schedule, a wider environment, new friends, more assignments, and dormitory life that required her to take care of almost everything herself.
Strangely, Eli enjoyed all of it.
She liked the quietness of studying in the library. She liked walking alone to the lecture hall while carrying several books. She even began to get used to eating alone when her schedule did not allow her to eat with her friends.
For Eli, a life like that did not feel sad. Instead, it felt simple, and she liked it.
Eli's communication with her family continued. Althea asked almost every day whether she had eaten. Daven would occasionally contact her to make sure everything was all right. Even the people from the Miller family continued to make sure Eli lacked nothing while living in the dormitory.
Joshua also still often sent her messages.
Have you eaten?
Don't stay in the library too long.
I have a match tomorrow. Come if you have time.
Eli usually replied briefly. Not because she did not care, but because her schedule was becoming increasingly busy.
Yes.
Okay.
I hope you win. If I can't make it, just send me a video of your match. We can discuss it before you start your next training session.
Joshua usually only replied with an emoji or a short message afterward. Their relationship had not changed. They still talked to each other, still kept each other updated, but the time they had was no longer as much as before.
Until one afternoon, when Eli hurried toward the lecture hall while reading some notes in her hands. She was so focused on the page she was reading that she did not notice someone walking toward her from the opposite direction.
Thud!
Her body collided with someone hard enough. The books she was holding immediately slipped from her arms and fell to the floor.
"Ouch!"
Eli instinctively took a step back. She immediately looked at her books and sheets of notes scattered across the floor. "Sorry. I wasn't watching where I was going."
She crouched down and began gathering her things. Her face flushed slightly with embarrassment, especially as several students began glancing in their direction.
Her hand was almost reaching for a book when another hand picked it up first.
