"You're really close to Eli, aren't you?" Josh asked.
Natalie smiled. "Yes. We're almost always together on campus."
Josh looked relieved. He had been worried that Eli did not have many friends at Raven. Hearing Natalie say that they often spent time together made Josh feel a little more at ease. "That's good."
Natalie then stood. "All right. I'll go get him."
Natalie smiled, then left the garden.
However, once she was no longer within Eli and Josh's sight, the smile on Natalie's face slowly disappeared. She stopped for a moment. Her hands clenched at her sides, while the friendly expression she had worn earlier turned cold.
She did not like what she had just seen.
Eli had laughed so freely while talking to Josh. There was no hesitation on her face. No distance like there was when Eli was with her and David. And what made Natalie most uncomfortable was the way Josh looked at Eli.
Natalie knew they were close. Very close, in fact. And that was enough to bother her.
She then put on a calm expression again before walking toward the gym. David was not far from the exit. He had just finished talking to several team members when he saw Natalie approaching.
"You came?" David immediately walked toward her while wiping the sweat from his forehead. "Where's Eli?"
Natalie did not answer right away. Instead, she stared at David for a few moments with a hesitant expression. As if there was something she wanted to say, but she was afraid of making things worse.
David immediately noticed the change in her expression. "What's wrong?"
Natalie shook her head slowly. "Nothing."
"Nat?"
"I just..." Natalie took a deep breath. "I actually don't want to interfere."
David frowned. "Interfere with what?"
Natalie looked toward the garden, then back at David. "Eli is with a man."
She deliberately kept her voice low.
David's expression immediately hardened. "Who?"
Natalie seemed hesitant to answer. "I don't know if I should tell you."
"Nat, tell me. Who is Eli with?"
Natalie lowered her head. "Josh."
The name immediately changed David's expression. "Joshua Miller?"
Natalie gave a small nod. "I didn't mean to say anything," she continued quickly. "Maybe I'm just too worried. They could simply be talking."
David said nothing.
