Cale gave a short, dark laugh. “Ah, Mr. Callister is with you, I see. Rest assured, sir—you’re not the only one. I’ll be far less forgiving if Harold thinks he can get away with this.”
Silence settled again until Daven finally broke it. His voice was calm, but the weight in his tone pressed down like steel.
“Cale, if Harold is truly behind all of this, I don’t care how you do it. Find him. And this time, don’t let him slip away.”
For a moment, Cale said nothing. Then, “Of course, Mr. Callister.”
“Cale,” Chase spoke again, his voice lower now, layered with emotion. “You’re my brother, and I trust you. If Harold really laid a hand on Josh, I’ll make sure he pays—but I’ll never forgive you if you let him escape again.”
A heavy silence stretched over the line before Cale answered, his words thick with resolve. “I understand. I’ll find Harold. And when I’m done… you’ll all know the truth about what he’s done.”
The call ended. Chase stared at his phone for a long beat before letting out a slow, tired breath.
Daven leaned forward. “Can he be trusted?”
Chase paused, then replied with a bitter edge. “That’s not something you need to question, Mr. Callister. After all, his men have been tracking Harold’s movements until now.”
“But Harold still slipped right past him, didn’t he?” Daven shot back, unwilling to yield.
“It’s better we don’t turn this into an argument, Mr. Daven,” Arsen cut in, sensing the sudden rise of tension between the two men. “I’m sure Mr. Cale has done everything in his power. If anything, he knows Harold’s patterns better than anyone.”
“You’re right.” Daven forced his voice steady. “Call Thomas. Beyond making him pay for what he’s done, we can’t allow Harold to walk away from the legal charges hanging over his head.”
“Yes, Mr. Daven,” Arsen answered quickly.
“I’ve already prepared a mountain of documents to file charges against him, Daven,” Chase added. “Your legal team and mine should exchange information. This time, Harold won’t slip through the cracks of the law so easily.”
A faint smile tugged at Daven’s lips. “Yes. We’ll make sure Harold doesn’t buy his way out of this.”
The tension between them began to ease, perhaps because at the center of it all was Josh.
“Any updates from Josh’s doctors?” Daven asked, turning to Arsen.
“Nothing yet, Mr. Daven. But we should wait there. In case anything urgent comes up. I’m also worried Miss Althea is becoming increasingly anxious.”
“Your assistant is right,” Chase cut in, snatching the blazer draped over the back of the sofa. “I’ll keep you updated on Josh’s condition if there are any developments.”
“No.” Daven rose as well, his voice steady, unyielding. “I need to know what’s happening to Josh, too. No matter what… he’s still my son.”
Felicia swallowed, nerves flickering in her throat, then managed a brief smile. “That’s fine. I know these things take time. Even now, Daven hasn’t told Josh who he is, has he?”
Althea fell silent.
“Like I said, I’ll wait for your permission. No matter how long it takes. I know forgiveness won’t come easily. But I won’t stop asking for it.”
Althea turned away, her eyes returning to the unopened doors. She drew a long, shaky breath. Her thoughts, meant to be focused solely on Josh, now tangled with Felicia’s words whether she liked it or not.
“Better to focus on Josh,” she told herself. “The rest can wait.”
The ER doors suddenly swung open with a screech of metal hinges, drawing every eye in the corridor. A doctor in a white coat stepped out, his expression grave. A mask hid half his face, but his eyes carried the weight of urgency. A stethoscope hung around his neck, a clipboard clenched in his hand.
Althea shot to her feet. “Doctor! Please—how’s my son? How is Josh?” Her voice shook, tears already streaming down her cheeks.
The doctor drew in a deep breath before answering. “We managed to stop the bleeding, but his condition is still extremely critical. Joshua has lost a significant amount of blood.” He lowered his gaze slightly, his tone steady but full of compassion.
“We need a blood donor immediately.”
