“Blood donor?” Althea gasped through her sobs. “His type is O, isn’t it? I’m O too—I can—”
The doctor shook his head firmly. “I’m sorry, ma’am. Your son’s blood type is O negative. It’s very rare. Not everyone with O blood can donate to him. If the match isn’t exact, it could be dangerous.”
Althea’s face drained of color. “O… negative?” Her voice cracked to a whisper. She looked at the doctor, confusion and fear knotting in her eyes. “Why am I only finding this out now?”
He nodded gently. “Yes. Blood types aren’t only A, B, AB, or O. There’s also the Rh factor—positive or negative. Joshua’s Rh is negative, which is extremely rare here. If your blood is O negative, then yes—you could donate to him.”
“Test me.” Althea thrust out her hand, her voice trembling but firm. “Check if my blood type matches Josh’s.”
“This is only a precaution,” the doctor explained gently. “The patient’s condition requires a large amount of blood. Could you also help us search for other potential donors with the same type?”
Althea’s face drained of color, her chest tightening. “Does this hospital have any reserves?”
“We’ve already checked the blood bank,” the doctor replied, his tone grim. “The supply of O negative is extremely low—almost nonexistent. Your son cannot receive O positive. Only O negative will work. We’re contacting other hospitals in the network, but time is running short.”
Her hands clenched the fabric of her blouse, twisting tightly. “So… what you’re saying is, if there isn’t a donor—?” Her voice cracked, the end of the sentence breaking into a sob.
The doctor’s gaze softened with understanding. “He’s in critical condition, ma’am. We need a donor with the exact same type. If there are any relatives with O negative, they could save his life.”
“My mother,” Felicia blurted suddenly.
Both the doctor and Althea turned toward her, their eyes searching, expectant.
“My mother’s type is O. Maybe her Rh factor matches.”
The doctor studied her intently, as if weighing whether this was a desperate claim or something he could rely on. “Are you certain? We’ll need quick confirmation.”
Felicia’s head bobbed in a firm nod, though her eyes shone with tears. “I’m sure, Doctor. Please… do whatever it takes to save Josh. I’ll call my mother right away.”
The doctor jotted something swiftly on his clipboard, then turned back to Althea. “The sooner, the better. And you, Mrs. Althea—please follow the nurse to check whether your Rh factor is compatible.”
“Yes, Doctor.”
“You’re right. I don’t know your mother. The woman I know wouldn’t want anything to do with someone like me.” Althea’s voice was firm, edged with pain. “We have a bad history. You know that. I won’t let Josh carry the burden of a past he never understood.”
Felicia stepped closer, her tone rising but remaining gentle. “Althea, this isn’t about the past. This is life and death. Josh can’t wait any longer.”
Althea bit her lip; her eyes glistened. “I know, but I’m scared, Felicia. I’m scared your mother will use this to force her way into Josh’s life. I’ve already been hurt enough. I won’t let that happen again.”
Felicia drew a long breath, steadying herself. “Then what do you want? Guarantees? Conditions? Tell me what it takes for you to trust that Mommy will act sincerely.”
For a few seconds Althea was silent. The chill of the hospital corridor pressed in; the faint beeps from the ER monitors sounded like a distant weight. Finally, she spoke, low but clear: “If Mrs. Kate agrees to help save Josh, there’s one condition she must understand: she may only meet Josh with my permission. No surprise visits, no introductions as his grandmother without my consent. No coercion, Felicia.”
Felicia blinked, taken aback. “That’s… ridiculous, Althea. Maybe Daven and I could accept that easily. But Mommy? She won’t accept rules like that.”
“Then,” Althea’s voice trembled but her eyes were steely, “she should stay out of it.”
Felicia clenched her fists, fighting to keep her emotions in check. “Do you realize what you’re saying? This is about your son’s life!”
