Jasper wasted no more time. As soon as he confirmed that the corridor outside was still empty, he immediately grabbed the radio clipped to his shoulder. "Unit Seven."
A voice promptly responded from the other end. "Yes, Mr. Jasper."
"Get the vehicle ready at the back entrance. Keep the engine running and make sure there's an escort."
"Understood."
Jasper stepped back to the doorway. His gaze swept across the corridor, where a thin haze of smoke was beginning to spread. The gunfire from the floor below was growing more frequent, punctuated by the shouts of the guards as they relayed reports to one another.
A few seconds later, the radio crackled again. "The vehicle is ready, Mr. Jasper."
"Six men are coming with me," Jasper said quickly.
"Mr. Silas ordered all personnel to remain at their assigned positions."
Jasper's expression immediately hardened. "This is my order."
Silence briefly filled the line. A moment later, the man's voice came back. "Understood."
Jasper slowly lowered the radio. He turned to the doctor. "Make sure she can still walk."
The doctor gave a brief nod. "I'll do my best."
Jasper looked at Lydia again. Her face had grown even paler than it had been just a few minutes earlier. Her breathing had become shallower, while one hand still pressed against her lower abdomen, where the pain refused to subside.
"The medication hasn't fully taken effect yet," the doctor said quietly. "She's still in pain."
Jasper nodded without saying a word. He pushed the door open a little wider again. The corridor was still empty, but the exchange of gunfire now sounded much closer.
Jasper remained in front with his pistol raised to chest level. Every few steps, he stopped to inspect every corner of the hallway before signaling for Lydia and the doctor to follow again. The six guards he had ordered earlier moved around them, forming a protective perimeter without saying much.
Lydia tried to keep her steps steady. But after walking only a few meters from the room, the pain stabbed through her again with such intensity that her breath caught. Her body suddenly lost its balance.
The doctor immediately caught her arm. "Easy, ma'am."
Lydia gave a faint nod and closed her eyes for a moment. Her chest rose and fell as she endured the pain that seemed to squeeze the inside of her abdomen. The medication she had just been given had eased the pain slightly, but every step still felt as though she was forcing her body to do something it could no longer bear.
They started moving again, but the sound of gunfire was growing closer.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The echoes reverberated throughout the corridor, making it impossible to tell where the shots were coming from. Before they could reach the first corner, the sound of running footsteps suddenly came from the far end of the hallway.
