His voice sounded much lighter than it had over the past few days. "The heartbeat is strong. Even stronger than we expected."
He fell silent for a moment. His gaze shifted between the ultrasound image and Naomi's face.
"The funny thing is," he said with a small smile, "Lydia cried the first time she heard the heartbeat. She said that was the moment she truly believed she wasn't alone anymore."
Cale let out a quiet breath.
"I think... you'd probably cry too if you were there to see it."
He leaned back in his chair. "The doctor said that if her condition keeps improving like this, Lydia can go home tomorrow."
The warmth in his voice grew even more apparent. "But the moment she heard that, she immediately started pressuring me."
Cale chuckled again. "'I want to see Naomi.'" He imitated Lydia's tone as best he could. "'If you won't take me there, I'll go by myself.'"
Cale slowly shook his head and laughed. Whether he was laughing at how well he had imitated Lydia or at his wife's stubbornness, even he didn't know. "I didn't know how I was supposed to talk her out of it."
He looked at Naomi with an amused smile. "I told her you still need to rest. The doctor hasn't allowed many visitors yet."
The room fell silent again. But this time... the silence no longer felt as suffocating as it had a few days earlier. Cale picked up the ultrasound image again, then placed it right beside Naomi's pillow so it would be easy to see when she opened her eyes.
"I brought it here on purpose." His fingers gently straightened the slightly crooked corner of the photo. "So that when you wake up, you'll be the first person to see the newest member of our family."
His smile slowly faded into a look filled with hope. "So," he said as he gently took Naomi's hand, which felt warmer than it had a few days earlier, "...don't keep us waiting too long."
Silence settled over the hospital room once again.
Cale was still sitting in the same chair. His fingers hadn't let go of Naomi's hand, as though he feared she would slip away again if he let his guard down for even a second. The heart monitor continued its soft, steady rhythm. Outside the window, the afternoon sunlight slowly stretched into the room, illuminating the floor as it crept toward the side of the bed where Naomi lay.
Cale's gaze slowly drifted outside.
