He slowly shook his head. "Turns out I was too confident."
A tear fell onto the back of Naomi's hand.
Then a second.
Then a third.
Cale didn't even try to wipe them away.
"I'm so sorry, Naomi." Cale's voice trembled. "If only we'd gotten there sooner that night." He clasped Naomi's hand in both of his, as though hoping that warmth could make up for all the regret that had come too late.
"Maybe... you wouldn't have to be lying here."
The sound of the door slowly opening broke the silence.
Chris came back in carrying two cups of hot coffee, one in each hand. The moment he saw Cale still sitting beside the bed with his head slightly bowed, he didn't say a word. The tears still lingering in the corners of the man's eyes were enough to explain what had just happened.
Chris set one of the cups on the table. "Cale."
Before he could say anything else, his gaze suddenly locked onto Naomi's hand. Her index finger... moved.
Very slightly. Almost imperceptibly.
Chris froze. His heart pounded so hard that, for a moment, he thought his eyes were playing tricks on him.
"Cale." His voice trembled.
Cale slowly raised his head. "What is it?"
Chris didn't even blink. "Her hand..."
Cale turned instinctively. A moment later... Naomi's finger moved again. This time, a little more clearly.
Cale's breath caught instantly. "Naomi?" He held her hand a little tighter, afraid that the tiny movement was nothing more than an illusion born from their own hope.
Naomi's eyelids fluttered faintly. Once. Then they became still again.
Chris immediately pressed the call button beside the bed.
A few seconds later, two nurses hurried into the room. "What happened?"
