Chapter 212

Isabella’s POV

:

The anxiety didn’t leave even after Maria and Mateo came home.

I tried to act normal. Tried to smile when Mateo ran in talking excitedly about some new chocolate cereal Maria had bought him. Tried to focus when Caterina started fussing over dinner. Tried not to check the lock twice before the sun had even fully set.

But the unease sat inside me stubbornly. Heavy. Persistent. And humiliatingly irrational.

Or maybe not irrational at all.

That was the problem.

I couldn’t tell anymore.

Because every time Alessia appeared unexpectedly, every time she inserted herself into our lives again after Dominic supposedly handled things, the fear inside me grew sharper, more instinctive and less easy to dismiss.

By the time the doorbell rang later that evening, my nerves were already stretched thin.

Caterina glanced towards the door.” That should be Dominic.”

I blinked. “He’s coming here?”

“He called while I was in the kitchen earlier,” she said casually. “I told him you were spiraling.”

“I was not spiraling.”

She gave me a look. “You called Maria like Mateo had been abducted by an international crime syndicate.”

I crossed my arms. “He was outside.”

“With Maria.”

“Still outside.”

Before she could continue bullying me, the door opened.

And there he was.

Dominic stepped inside wearing dark jeans and a black button-down with the sleeves rolled up, looking unfairly good for someone currently responsible for ninety percent of my stress.

His eyes found me immediately. And softened.

God.

That was still dangerous.

Mateo ran towards him instantly. “Dominic!”

Dominic caught him easily with one arm. “There’s my favorite football champion.”

“I scored two goals today.”

“Only two? I expected at least five.”

“I was being humble.”

Dominic looked at me over Mateo’s head. “That’s definitely your child.”

I rolled my eyes despite myself.

Traitorous emotions.

Mateo immediately began dragging him towards the living room to explain something extremely urgent involving animated dinosaurs. Dominic listened like it was a high-level business negotiation.

And somehow, watching them together eased something inside me. Just slightly.

Because Mateo looked happy around him. Safe. Loved.

And Dominic, God, Dominic looked like he loved being a father more than he loved breathing.

That was the problem too.

Nothing about him was ever simple.

A few minutes later, Mateo disappeared towards his room to find some toy he apparently desperately needed to show Dominic.

The moment he was gone, Dominic turned towards me fully. His expression shifted immediately, becoming softer, more serious.

“You’re worried,” he said. It was not a question.

I crossed my arms tighter. “Your fiancée keeps appearing.”

“She’s not going near him again.”

The certainty in his voice should’ve reassured me. Instead, I just felt tired. “You said that before.”

“I mean it this time.”

I laughed quietly. “That doesn’t even make sense.”

“It does to me.”

He stepped closer slowly, carefully, like approaching a frightened animal. Which honestly felt accurate at thi point.

“Isa,” he said quietly, “look at me.”

I hated that I did it automatically. Hated that after everything, my body still responded to his voice before m brain could argue.

“She’s going back to Florence,” he continued. “And she’s staying there.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

“How?”

“Because I’m telling you I’ll handle it.”

I exhaled shakily. “There’s always something to handle with you.”

That landed. I saw it in his eyes immediately. But I was so tired of the constant worry, of just waiting for something to go wrong. I just wanted some peace and quiet without any added stress. But with him, it was apparently too much to ask.

Instead of getting defensive and giving me explanations, he nodded once. “I know.” A pause. Then softer, “But you don’t need to carry this alone.”

God.

That nearly broke me. How did he know me so well?

Because the truth was, I was carrying it alone even with everyone around me. Even with Caterina and Maria and Luca and Dominic trying in his own complicated way.

The fear still sat inside my chest by itself.

I looked away. “She scares me.” The confession came quietly. Honestly.

And Dominic stilled immediately. Not annoyed. Not dismissive. Just attentive.

“Why?”

I laughed weakly. “You mean besides the fact that she keeps showing up wherever we are?”

“She hasn’t threatened you.”

“No,” I admitted. “But sometimes I think that’s worse.”

His brows pulled together slightly.

I wrapped my arms tighter around myself. “I can’t explain it properly,” I whispered. “I just….every instinct I

have tells me to keep Mateo away from her.”

The room went quiet. Dangerously quiet. Because Dominic knew me. Knew I wasn’t dramatic by nature. Knew I trusted my instincts.

And I could see the moment part of him started taking this more seriously.

He stepped closer then until his hands rested lightly on my arms. Warm. Steady. Grounding.

“She is not going to hurt you,” he said firmly. “Or Mateo.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“Yes,” he said immediately. “I can.”

I looked up at him. And there it was again. That impossible certainty. That dangerous confidence. The thing that had always made people follow him. Trust him.

Love him.

“I won’t let anything happen to either of you.”
